Thank you for all your replies. Sometimes fish are more sensitive to certain airborne chemicals than others. Some of the fish in my friends tank died suddenly and I would like to blame some outer source. All of the water parameters were fine. Just trying to get to the bottom of it. I thought maybe Febreeze, which she does spray occasionally, would be the culprit. But, I think we may need to search harder.
seeing how febreeze can kill pet birds if it's sprayed near them. It's say to say it would likely kill the fish if it got into the water.swany said:

I read an article a few years back about Febreeze being hazardous to dogs and cats. Apparently, it is not harmful to these pets and was a scam to put Febreeze in a bad light. As we have all learned, fish are very delicate creatures to domesticate within the confines of their four walls and I believe, therefore, are much more suseptible to chemicals that may find their way into the water.
As is turns out, I have just found out tonight, that the Onyx substrate which the manufacturer claims to have a slight buffering capacity is the culprit in this particular case. The water's pH had skyrocketed and when a 50% water change was performed, the pH had dropped too suddenly for some fish to adjust.
