Feeder to Pet?

That is one beautiful fish! ^_^

Okay everyone,

I called one of my favorite LFS and they said they have some of the foods mentioned, as well as their own stocked foods for goldfish and koi. So, I'm going to pick some of those out tomorrow or on Friday.

I went back to Petco, and they didn't have any food for Goldfish whatsoever and tried to sell me the tropical flakes I already have, oy. But more importantly, they wouldn't let me pick out other feeders to buy. It was either a net full or none. However, they did have several tanks of "pet" goldfish from which, I was told, I am allowed to pick and choose. The employee said all goldfish get along, but I wanted to ask here first. Could I get one or two of the following as a friend for my new pet:

"Butterfly Koi"
"Moor"
"Oranda"
"Ryuken"
And then there's a tank of fat, really fancy tailed goldfish that don't have labels.

Oh, and I put my new friend (named Swish! for his/her swishy tail) in a 20gal to start, to be upgraded as needed.

I would lean more towards the comet/shubunkin tank so you have another long bodied goldfish. Butterfly koi are pond fish and get much to large for an aquarium.

Mixing fancy varieties (especially double-tailed) with common and comet goldfish can be a problem, as the common and comets can get to the food faster and eat more of it faster. Fancy varieties tend to be slower and have more mobility problems.

As for feeders as pets, I LOVE melanistic bluntnose minnows.

cant choose ur own feeder?! HAHAHAH i walk right in point and say give me that one. Or ill grab the net and get it myself. 6'2" 230lbs, i never get a refusal!

Well, at 5'7, 110lbs and a baby face that screams 13 instead of 23... I generally get, "shoo, little girl, we have better things to do" lol

Maybe you should come with me next time :P

That doesn't happen with me... They say they've got better things to do, then hand me a net lol

Well, just be confident.
5'2, 115, and I've NEVER been refused a fish :D

Just walk in there, point, and say, "I want that one. You won't get it for me? Fine, get me someone who will."

Agree with Squeakfish.. definitely. There's no reason you can't pick out the fish you want. The employee who treated you that way is an idiot. I usually don't make an issue of most things, but in this case I would. I'd go back and drag the manager into this. Two reasons... First, if this employee talked to you like that he/she is probably taking the same condescending attitude with other customers - many of whom are complete beginners that are deciding whether or not to enter this hobby for the first time. And second, I wouldn't let anyone in a retail sales position treat me like that and get away with it. That being established and resolved.. then get the fish you want and go. Next time you go back again, you'll get much better service.

Don't get the Koi, Moor, or Ryukin. An Oranda or Fantail would be okay. Also look into another Comet or a Common, Shubunkin, or Wakin. What you're looking for now is something that's a good swimmer, large-bodied, and sturdily built. Avoid any type that's fragile, delicate, or smallish - like telescopes, celestials, pearscales, or one without a dorsal fin.
