Feeder to Pet?

Tried again. I can't pick out a fish, unless it's from the "pet" tank (which by the way, they recommended I get a Butterfly Koi today, they say it's not a pond fish and it's good in aquariums. And that it grows to the size of the tank it's in... Yea, sure). It's either a bag full of randomly scooped up feeders or none at all. And they won't give me the net, either, Petco policy or so they say (I assume so, though, it makes sense). So sayeth the almighty manager. Well, the store manager... the floor manager was going to let me get the Comet I wanted myself until the store manager came stalking out.

It's alright, I don't expect good service or any form of kindness or intelligence from the Petcos around here anymore (not after having an employee literally yell at me for keeping crayfish without declawing them first. It should be noted I verbally annihilated that employee, nobody tells me to mutilate my pet and walks away unscathed). Meh, I tried.

I'm going to my favorite LFS store tomorrow, though (for the food). I think they have feeders there in the back room. I'll get one there, they're real nice and friendly since they're a mom & pop type store. They'll let me pick out whatever I want if they have it. And if they don't, they'll order me some Comets to bring in with their next shipment.

=0 That's just wrong. Any pet store should let you pick your own, even if it's a feeder, it's still a sale. At PJ Pets I used to buy pet mice, they just had a big feeder tank in a back room but they would still let you go back and pick out the ones you want (sadly, they are no longer in my area)

And the declawing thing, HOLY CRAP what is wrong with those people?

Good luck at your LFS, I hope you find a nice one to go with your cutie.

Well, you know this comes from the manager now, so it wasn't just the employee. They must be worried people will realize they can buy 25-cent feeders as pets - then no one will buy $15 goldish anymore. Haha! Too bad though, that's very short-sighted.

The declawing thing is actually (unfortunately) very common and commonly recommended. The most commonly sold crayfish species are highly aggressive and people insist on keeping them in community tanks, so they either take the whole arm and claw off (declawing) or just the bottom portion of the claw (dethumbing). You know, instead of setting up proper tanks, recommending people find less aggressive species, etc... you get to mutilate your pet instead. UGH!

Alright, the LFS had Comets... just HUGE ones! Wow, they were absolutely beautiful! I can't wait for Swish to be as big and beautiful as they were. How quickly/slowly do they grow, btw?

Anyway, they didn't have any small goldfish (the smallest was about 6") but they said they save a few of the "feeders" from their next shipment next week for me, so I can pick some appropriately sized friends. I really want a huge Comet now though, lol, they were only $14.99. So, yay, new friends soon.

In the meantime though, I took some of my livebearer feeders and put them with Swish. They seem to be getting along very nicely, they're even schooling together. No substitute for a Goldie, but at least it's something in the short run.

New pics of Swish!:

Wow!! Another has discovered how really beautiful a goldfish can be! I found this out after my daughter won a goldfish at the local fair. Brought it home and plopped it into a spare tank. Now we have three (another from the fair from last year) and one we bought for the first fish to keep it company. They are Ryukins and are very happy and pleasant ot watch. Swish is a great name and is a beautiful fish!!!:thm: Swish looks very happy to be with his new friends!!!!

I can't beleive that people declaw their crayfish....how awful.

A friend for Swish, finally!

I got to pick through some feeders today, here's Bruiser (named for his/her "black eye" lol):
