I'm thinking about buying my first fish tank. I was wanting to get a big one since I heard they are easier to maintain. How much does a 55 gallon cost? The tank only...no supplies. Anyone on here selling a 40 or 55 gallon tank near Ohio? Hopefully someone can help me out! Thanks!

Hey there:) Welcome aboard:) There's a ton of information here, so be sure to read up before starting anything. Seems you're on your way, though.

Walmart carries 55g tanks and stands. I have one myself - actually, all of my tanks are from walmart - and there's nothing wrong with them. The tank itself is 150$, but it includes a filter, heater, cover, and lights. The filter is probably best replaced, but for a fish-only tank (no live plants) the lights are just fine. Seems to be a pretty good deal to me - even if you only keep the tank... at least around here. The stand they sell is also great (black with 4 frontal cabinets) and is 70$. It's really sturdy.

Do you know what kind of fish you might like? And have you read up on fishless cycling?:)

I work in a petshop and I see tons of beautiful fish. I want to stick to community fish. Maybe some leopard danios, neon tetras, black neon tetras, phantom black tetras, serpae tetras. Maybe a shark of some sort.

I have read up on cycling but I don't understand it? Can someone explain it better? I'm only 16 so I'm not fimilar with their fancy wording. :)

yeah i second the recomendation on the walmart tank. i just added another filter to the existing one though. didn't replace. it is a very good deal and yes you will want to replace the lights for a planted tank. hope this helps

they are about $100 From Petco/petsmart or other store like that. They come with lids and lights. Make sure you read about how to cycle your tank. If you have any Questions just post them there are plenty of helpful people here.

i dont think i want to use live plants. the ones in the shop we dont have much luck with...they turn brown over time and get green fuzzy stuff all over them.

anyone good place where i can read up on fish tank setup? and what supplies would you recommend i get? like what brand filter for a 55 gallon...what wattage of heat, etc.

I would agree with getting an all in one kit and just adding another filter to it.

does the pet shop you work at sell tanks?
do you get a discount?

as far as a heater its 3Watts per gal. so at least a 150 watt for the 55.

what kind of fish do you want?
penguin 330 is about $21 at thatpetplace.com

For cycling--please check the newbie forum, and the archives--there are several good threads covering both fish and fishless cycling.

we sell fish tanks. i'm not sure of the price of 55 gallon. and no--we don't get discounts at pet supplies plus which sucks because i have so many animals so a discount would be nice. i was thinking about just buying the tank itself and buying the supplies on ebay brand new. i might save a few bucks. i just don't know what to get--like brand names and stuff.....

so let me ask this...if you were starting a 55 gallon tank what would YOU buy?

I went the Wal-Mart route the few years back and bought the 55-gallon kit and stand... I never added another filter or anything and I really have no complaints about the tank at all. If I were you, that's what I'd do... Might be the cheapest/most convenient route to go.
