I'd suggest fasting the fish for 3-5 days to rule out any other issues. IF the gunk is still forming and you're not feeding then something else is amiss.

Might try powering down the filter just before feeding them so they can eat all the food. Ace sells a foot switch to make this an easy routine.

Thanks for the help/tips. I would really not rather use it but that's a lot to through away and not use. Maybe ill try a homemade food along with a good staple diet.
