Ok, so I've had my 75 gallon for 6 years. I LOVE it and recieve many compliments on it. It sits in our living room and is the focal point of the room.

Just this morning I about had a panic attack. The filter (A penguin bio-wheel) stopped working. I noticed it right away. I unplugged it and pluged it back in -- nothing. I did that twice, just to make sure. I have never had a problem with the filter whatsoever, until now. Why did it just stop working??

I ran out and got a brand new filter. Another penguin, because I loved it so much and it kept my water crystal clear.

My worry is that all the 'good bacteria' in my old filter is now lost, of course. So I'm essentially starting all over. If I put my fish back in the tank now, will they all die?? I have mollies, tetra's, swordtails, and algae eaters.

Any advice? I'd hate to lose all my fish, just because the filter isnt matured yet!!!

the old filter is only lost if it has dried out, plus you should have enough bacteria in the tank to reseed the filter, its no different than changing out your filter with new from the box.. the bacteria isn't only in the filter..

Thanks

Thanks very much for your help. I freaked out because I've never had problems with my filter until now. Thanks again!!

Do you still have the old filter installed?

If so, try lifting up on the impeller housing a bit and resetting it; might restart it. Or try removing filter and making sure all is clean in the impeller area...

Try what aardvark1 said specificly if youhave sand. Sand can be a real pain in the a if it gets in your filter.

Where did you put the fish and why?

well if it ever happens again get the emperor, they are also bio-wheels but better quality, just more expensive. THere made by the same company (marineland)
