filter frustration

I don't know a thing about canister filters but I have a planted tank. When I do a water change I turn off the filter. The last thing I do is take a net and just bang it gently against all of the plants so that anything loose floats to the surface. I put a bit of cotton ball into the net and scoop out everything that's floating. If you're not doing this already try it and see if that helps.

I did my weekly cleaning today and moved around the plants a little. You can see there is some stuck on the intake on the second picture. This is about 30 minutes after I turned the filter back on.

Any suggestions for my 55 gallon planted tank? Canister?

Canister. :thm:

There are a lot of good choices on the market, though I'm partial to the Filstar.

What problem are you having? Is the water just not getting clear?

The water is getting clear. With the plants and the new gravel it seems like a lot just sits on the gravel and doesn't go anywhere. I use filter floss and I have to change it constantly.

With the big driftwood, I don't feel like I get much current. Also, they have issues with noise and it's in my bedroom.

I want something powerful and quiet.

It sounds to me that your filter is working OK. My intake generally looks like yours or worse and the fact that your filter pads are always grungy suggests the pump is doing its job.

Having said that I don't know of any folks who regretted upgrading to a canister.

I think I need one. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I don't want to buy a piece of junk.

One other problem, I won't have the slightest idea on how to hook it up.

Many folks have their favorite canister styles, for one reason or another. Even sites that folks will post with reviews, are nothing more than personal preferences.

If person "A" thinks something is difficult, it may not be to person "B".

What is quiet to me, may not be to you.

Most all major name brand canisters will suffice. And to tell the truth, most have options that are not necessary. Such as multiple baskets for untold variations of media.

Wow! Thank you!
