So I just got my new 80g tank and I'm setting it up. It came with a built in filter, just a Jebo water pump that only moves about 125g per hour pumped into a try of filters and those round ceramic bio rings and then back out. My tank also has a built in over flow in the corner.

What I'm thinking is to not even use this built in filter, it doesn't move enough water and I don't think it'll cut it. BUT it covers the back of my tank perfectly (and fits with the light hood) and I don't want to buy anything or DIY a cover cause I think it will look bad. SO what I was thinking is to get a Fluval 404 and hang the intake and out-take pipes over the built in over flow in the corner of my tank and run the hoses in and out of the holes that are built into the old filter that I wont be using. I know this is kinda hard to picture and maybe I'll try to post pics later when I'm not at work, but do you think this will work?? Can I put the whole hang on the back of the tank part under water and hang it on my overflow??

Thanks for any help!! :duh:

125gph for an 80g tank? What were they thinking? That's barely enough for a 20.

Add the Fluval and use the built in also, if possible.
Yeah that's what I was thinking when I opened it!! It was in Liters though so they were trying to fool us :duh:
I knew that the filter wasn't going to be that good, but 125gph just is horrid!
I paid $350 for the curved glass bow front tank, stand and hood and lights(two 65w and two 1500k) so I knew that the filter would be bunk. Now I'm just trying to find a way to hook it all up and still look good. The tank is in our dinning room up against a mirrored wall, so the back of the tank can't be all funky with hang on stuff etc...My wife will KILL me!! :cool2:

why dont you drill it? run the rear filter, but have the main in the stand...
I really don't want to drill the tank! If I could just run the hoses through the crappy filter and up throught the built in over flow I don't think it would look that bad just having the hoses run up the back of the tank( because of the over flow there is a section in the corner of the tank where you can't see through the glass, this is where I would run the hoses up to the top of the tank) I can also keep the Fluval in the stand and it has built in holes to run the hoses and power cords out the back. But my question remains...can I hang the intake and out take(for the Fluval) from the overflow on the inside of my tank?? Is it possible to have the whole in/out take under water?? Or is this just a bad idea all together??
Thanks again!!

ROFL! You got a huge turnover there, UncaBret :)

I think what your saying is the the input going into the cannister will be gravity fed in your set up? That is no part of the intake will be above water level? I haven't seen this set up before, but I think it could work depending upon the filter. That is to say I believe a cannister typically has a pump to take water out of the cannister and push it back up into the tank. Water flowing into the cannister is essentially being siphoned out with the help of gravity. As far as saying will this work for you? Well without actually seeing a tank of your type close up I can't really venture a guess.
