I currently have a XP3 and Penguin 350. The Penguin is getting nosier by day, I think the impeller is messed up. I am planning on replacing the filter but I can't decide if I should I go for another canister filter like XP 1 or buy a HOB. If HOB is recommended which should I go for. The Penguin 350 is selling for $26 at Petsnart. Please help me decide. Thanks!
Whatever filter that you choose, it should be more then sufficient to oxygenate the water and provide enough surface aggitation for the tank. Therefore there really will not be a need for a powerhead. If you want a good HOB filter and you are not happy with the penguin series(I had a penguin 330 which now Marineland has replaced this model with penguin 350,same filter. It made a terrible awful dragging noises like something was stuck. It was the impeller) you can always go with a filter from the aquaclear series. They are excellent filters and very quiet as long as you maintain them.
I have switched to the Aquaclear filters and like them much better than anything else I have had. They are cheap, easy to maintain, cost very little to run and the sponges you can of course rinse time and time again. If cared for properly those sponges last virtually forever.
I am leaning towards Aquaclear 70. Petsmart is selling them for $27. They seem to be pretty easy to maintain. My local LFS had a used Magnum 350 for $40 but they don't have very good reviews.
