I'll be buying a 90g in November and I'd like to go with a double filter set-up. The question is: do I install two filters at the normal 90g rate or two filters under that rate or 1 filter at the normal rate and 1 filter under that?

I'm installing for redundancy, not for addtional filtering.

Hrm, I think I confused myself :)

OKay, here's what I was thinking of buying (and yes, I want either Penguin or Emporer), which is better?:

1. 2 Emporer 400s (up to 80g each)
2. 2 Penguin 350B (up to 70g each)
3. 2 Penguin 200 (up to 50g each)
4. 2 Emporer 280 (up to 50g each)

Or a mix and match of something there? Perhaps 1 400 and 1 280?

I also have a HOT Magnum 250gph that I was considering hooking up as a redundancy and for water polishing. It's for up to 50g.

Suggestions?

Well, if redundancy is what you're looking for, then the obvious choice would be to get the two Emperor 400s along with that HOT 250.

Get as much filtration as you can afford. If you find your filtration is too much, you can always reduce the flow rate by closing their valves. Also, having this extra power you can esaily in the future let the tank with only one filter if something happened to the other, or you can also use the spare one to help a faster cycle on another tank.

Ditto!

size for 2x tank then add HOT

I'd buy a filter that says it was enough for a 180 gallon tank, then add the HOT for circulation and micron filtration if necessary sometimes.

Redundancy would suguest that if one failed, you will have the other one to hold the load completely. All else I have to say has been said and is therefore redundant.....
ROFL! I love redundant :)

Isn't a filter for a 180g a little overkill for a 90g? If it fails, I'd only have the HOT (50g) to support an 90g tank?

What kind of fish are you going to keep?
Not 100% sure as yet. I'm either going to do a NG rainbow biotope or a mish mash of things :)

I might do a mish mash and do the biotope in April instead. I've got some "extra" fish that need to be moved to a bigger tank and they don't fit with the NG theme.
