Filters - thinking of going to a cannister...

My tens are all fry/QT/shrimp or inverts and as such are sponge filtered. But I have used canisters on 10s in the past. Above that I use canisters. I do not like HOBs - they are inflexible and noisy, and also poor for planted tanks (which most of my tanks are). Good canisters (Eheim) are silent and highly flexible.

But the bottom line is that it is personal choce - select filtration which fits your personal style and needs.

One of my neuroses is that tanks should be seen and not heard. I have never met an HOB I could not hear, and I have a collection of canisters that you have to touch to confirm that they are on. I prefer the latter. But as I said, a personal choice and comfort item.

My whispers dont make any noise...

My AquaClears aren't noisy either. The only reason I know they are on is because I have built little water falls for many of my filters. So the splashing of the water is the only thing I hear, and I look at it this way... you can't like fish and not like the sound of what sounds like a natural waterfall! :p

I do agree that a noisy pump or something mechanical isnt nice to hear, but as for the splashing of the water... I dont even notice it. :)

I just got a copy of this magazine today - great article! Thanks so much for the heads up on this. It really helped with my canister research.

AFG - I most certainly can like fish and not like the sounds of multiple waterfalls inside my home, and to me a waterfall from a filter is still a filter noise - as I said originally, it is personal choice. What is right for you is not at all what is right for me, nor is there any reason why it should be.

RTR- I think you read just a LITTLE too much into what I said. Nobody is telling you that you HAVE to do this or do that, I was sarcastically saying that (for me), I have to have a natural sounding aquarium with noises of... water.

I am sorry if you took what I said to mean anything else, but simply put - if I wouldn't have built a little waterfall onto some of my filters I would not hear them at all... ;)

AFG - I do try to differentiate between things which are my personal preferences (canisters over HOBs, silent tanks over water noise) and things which are fact. When anyone makes a broad statement without such restrictions, even when they add a smiley at the end, and it is a matter of personal choice rather than fact, I will object. There is too much bad info on the boards as is, and if my objections focus people on thinking for themselves then they are doing what they are intended to do.

OK that makes sense, but can you see that most people wouldn't think I am trying to "preach the gospel" about waterfalls? Maybe, just maybe... I should have added "IMO", blah blah blah but that is why I said "I look at it this way..." ;)

Of course I don't think thats the only way you can have an aquarium. Thats just the only way I will have an aquarium. I have a few silent ones, but the others make up for it. I was only having a little fun, nothing too serious on my end. :)
