Hi everybody, im looking into getting a 3ft tank around 40 gal and im not sure if it is worth shedding out the cash for a canister filter, would a decent internal power filter do the job? Im not sure yet exactly what fish i plan to keep but it will be along the lines of small communtiy fish, tetras, danios, cory's ect. So what do you guys reccomend?

Yeah, I wouldn't go for an internal filter. A smaller canister filter would work, or an AC or Emperor HOB power filter would be a good option as well.

I have good success with a Penguin 350. The AC 110 would probably be even better if you can find a deal. The drs. had it for under 50 dollars a while back, don't know if that is still available.

AquaClear for HOB all the way!!! I have one and they are amazing and really quiet as long as the water is at the right level.

While the above HOB advice is sound, I would add that if you *ever* think of going planted and might want to inject CO2, a canister would be a better investment now as HOBs and CO2 injection are not the best combination.

I'd go canister myself. Not only do most have a massive amount of media, Even if you think plastic plants are just fine, you will probably want plants. And let me tell you, I thought the same thing, I went and got plants, and got a different filter as well.

i'd go for the internal or external power filter, either an aquaclear70 or 110 or a fluval internal, i've always felt that canister filters are overrated on their tank capacity, i've got one rated for 30g on a 5g tank and still added on an AC20.

While I agree that AC's are the best hob filter. Using a 110 on a small tank would be overkill. The flow from that filter moves sand in my 90 and it's turned down. I can imagine the smaller fish looking like they were in a toilet going round and round. I run an AC 70 on my 55 and it works great.

I love all my emperor 400's have a look at them for your tank.
