Finally giving my 55 the overhaul it deserves

No kissing gouramis please. In a 55g, two 12-inches monsters is cramping.
I just had one big one in a 29g, (my first fish tank) when I was 7-8 years old, haven't really done any community tanks since I was say, 11-13, so... I just added in the Kissing Gourami's for the memories! hehe :)

Tank looks great. If I ever decide to switch to sand, I am going to have to skip the dedicated girlfriend idea. Don't think my wife would like that much.

lmao, that was good, got a good smile off that one. :D

Well, I got the smaller of the two pieces of driftwood in my tank today. :-) I don't have any pics yet, as I was in a hurry to get to work, but I spent 3 hours boiling it last night to get most of the tannins out of the wood. It looks great! Very deep brown with a reddish tint to it... ahhh... I can't wait until I have both in the tank! I'll get some pics up either tonight or tomorrow. :-)

Ok, time for more pictures. :-) I didn't take a whole lot this morning, but this should give you an idea of what the first piece of driftwood is like. (the water was slightly cloudy this morning... was crystal clear last night... its not amber or anything, just slightly cloudy. Is this typical when adding driftwood?)

Finally got the other piece of driftwood in the tank today

Ok guys, as promised, I've finally taken the time to put the new driftwood in the tank and get some pictures. I soaked it for a full 2 weeks (and I'm not always a patient person... that was not easy) and decided it was time to really see how the tank looks. I still want to get some more live plants, and finish getting rid of the fake stuff, but the fake ones don't look TOO bad in there for now.

Here's a few pictures of my new swords and how I've rearranged a few plants

(there's a few questions to come later which the above picture kinda pertains to)

*drum roll* Here's the new piece of driftwood. I know I was going to go horizontal, but I decided to go vertical for now. We'll see how it works out. (gonna get one more piece for the center of the tank, though that's still just an idea)

Potted one of the swords in the top of the driftwood. I did actually pot it in some sand, as there was just enough of a hole in the wood there to fill it with some sand, plop the sword in, and cover its roots with sand.

Closeup of Quasimodo (sadly one of the only fish I have named thus far)

Not sure on the scientific name, but Petsmart labeled him as a "Golden Wonder Killie fish." I actually adopted him since he had a slight curve in his spine and the store couldn't sell him, and I didn't want them to euthanize him.

Remember how I mentioned I'd have a question up above? Well, here it is. (although, I did just ask a question to bring it up... :silly: ) Tetras, to my best understanding are egg layers. Do the females become more plump as they begin producing viable eggs? I have one blackskirt tetra, of 4, (planning to add 2-3 more) which is not only more square in the belly (when viewed from the side) but is MUCH more plump. (when viewed from the front) Is this fish potentially a female? Sorry, I didn't get any good head-on shots tonight... I'll try again tomorrow if I can.

Anyway, I should go get some sleep, but I hope you guys enjoy the update. :-) :grinyes:

Great job. The tank looks awesome.
