Finally giving my 55 the overhaul it deserves

Ok... I've finally gotten addicted to the look of sand over gravel (I actually have polished river rock in my 55, but the gravel pieces are quite large... some nearly the size of my pinkie nail) and I'm going to convert to sand as of tomorrow afternoon. I've already bought the sand and even washed it (freakin a... takes a lot of effort to wash 50 lbs of sand! :mad2:) and have it ready and waiting for me. This is step 1 of 3.

Step 2 is the new malaysian driftwood I have soaking in the garage. In about a week, I'll have 2 absolutely beautiful pieces of driftwood to go into my tank. This is the first of two

Its very large, as is probably evident by the 20oz water bottle in the background. (to clear up any questions, yes, that is a team associated nitro tc3 on the left)
This is the other piece (for the time being, want to get more later on)

I'm sorry about the horrible photo quality... it was driving me nuts, but my camera's battery needs to be charged, so I just used my phone. I'll get you some pictures with a REAL camera soon. (Canon 300d)

Step 3 is to get the rest of my fake plants replaced by live ones and REALLY enjoy watching my fish. :-) I'm also planning to bump my cardinal population to 12ish, and perhaps even get 5-7 kuhli loaches. (they're still subjective... I'm tempted by either cories or angelicus/yoyo loaches too) Anyone have any opinions as to which ones I should fixate on? (and no, I'm not gonna get 7 yoyo's if I get them, probably 3-4 :-P) Currently I have 3 clown loaches, (Yes, I know they get too big, they're about 3.5" each atm, had them for about a year... once they get to be between 5" and 6" I'm going to give them to a buddy of mine with a 240g tank, and replace them either with more babies or some angelicus loaches anyway) 4 scisortail rasboras, 4 harlequin rasboras, 4 blackskirt tetras, a bamboo shrimp, and one lonely cardinal tetra (at one point I had about 20... but shortly after introducing them, I had an ich outbreak, and it wiped out all but one of my cardinals, and all 3 of my bosemani rainbows.) Just so we're clear, this is in a 55g tank, though I do believe I mentioned it earlier, wanted to clear up any potential confusion just in case. I'm running a Rena XP3 and an Emperor 400, a 300 watt heater set to 82 degrees, (for when I had the cardinal school, and to help minimize risk of future ich outbreaks) 2x55 watt 6500k lights, and doing approx. a 40-50% water change every week. Any other info you need, please feel free to ask. Oh, and I'm always open to suggestions on plants to get too. I have 2 anubias nana and a handful of anacharis atm, hoping to get some hornwort, java ferns, and perhaps another anubias or two too. :-) Thanks for taking the time to read all of this. :-D

Looks like you are off to a fine start!

Hey Bob, haven't talked to you in a while. :-) Any suggestions on the fish/plant stocking ideas?

As it turns out, I forgot a couple of my fishy buddies on the original list. I also have 2 true siamese algae eaters in my tank. No idea how they slipped my mind, but as I was prepping my tank for the big sand shift, I happened to notice them and figured I'd toss them into the list. :-) Looks like its time to really get cranking and get my sand in my tank. Wish me luck! ;-)

Well, not sure that anyone cares, but I got the sand in the tank, all of the gravel is officially out. I'm loving how the sand bottom looks. I've got 3 anubias nana, a few bunches of hornwort, a couple bunches of anacharis, and a plant I've yet to truly identify, though it looks almost identical to Cryptocoryne Walkeri. I'm still waiting on the driftwood to cure, but once I've got that set and get a few more plants... its going to be a much more natural and peaceful tank to watch. Still no suggestions on fish? Anyone?

it sounds great!

your stocking plan sounds like a good one. you could probably add plenty more cardinals if you wanted.

Think so? How many cardinals would you recommend, knowing my current setup? I'm still contemplating the kuhli's, it'll either be 6-7 kuhli's, or 5-6 spotted cory's. Any opinions on either one? Will cories and clown loaches be able to cohabitate without too much fighting over turf?

Great wood! You could post some progress pictures. lol. And just me personally, but I would go with the cories. I really do enjoy watching them. Such personalities!

Haha, I'm going to get some real pictures of the driftwood probably tonight, and I'll get some pictures of the tank in its present state. :-) I was kinda leaning towards the cories, though I think the kuhli's would be fun. I really enjoyed watching them while I worked at petsmart, so now that I have a sand bottom, I think I'm ready to have my own school of cories. :-) By any chance, what are your favorite species of corydoras? I'm hoping to get some nice ones from a local store like petsmart, since the LFS's around here seem to neglect their cory inventory... the only one that does have them has like 3 tiny brown ones. :-\

I really like the pandas and they juhli cories. I have 2 "green" cories in my tank now that I enjoy as well. I love how they remind me of the monopoly man. I had kuhlis and gave them to my sister. They are fun to watch, but I only got to see them at night. The cories are active all day.
