finally got a test kit

Hey Skater, we sometimes forget that some posters are a little younger than us. Glad to see you are so interested in the hobby! Adding established media just means adding things with already established beneficial bacteria to your tank. You can do this by getting a used filter cratridge from a friend with a more mature tank and putting it in your filter or taking a couple handfuls of gravel from someone else's tank and putting it in a nylon stocking (cut the top off and tie it in a knot) and let it sit in your tank for a few weeks or even just taking someone's filter cartridge or filter floss and squeezing the water out of it and into your tank. The most improtant thing to remember is to NOT let whatever you use dry out as you transport it from one tank to another. Use water from the original tank to keep it wet. Also, do NOT rinse it before you add it to your tank.
As you test, make sure you follow directions exactly. Make sure you shake the bottles and vials as directed. It is always better to correct water problems by making water changes as necessary, not by adding chemicals(except Prime to take out harmful chlorine).
Did you get your tank for Christmas?

My older sister got a 20 gal from her boyfriend.
It's a saltwater, I thought fish were cool so I wanted to be different and went freshwater lol
I got her old 12 gallon with this goldfish in it. We took the goldfish out(way to big for the tank now), put it in a local lake, did a 50% water change, and got some fish and put em in there...

This was before I even signed up here and started learning about Ph levels and Ammonia and Nitrite/Nitrate lol

Did you keep the old filter, gravel and decorations? If so, and as long as you didn't scrub it all clean or let it dry out, you should already have some good bacteria. In the future, you don't want to release any of your tank fish into the wild. It can introduce disease and mess up the natural ecosystem. Live and learn;)
Glad to see you are really into learning how to keep your fish alive, well and thriving :)

Yep, I kept everything. I just recently switch the filter cartridge, added some more gravel, and had some old decorations in there.
I think all I need to do is weekly water changes :)\
Thanks for the help, I'll try not to release any more fish into the wild :)

It was a goldfish. It was huge too!
It wasn't really my decision anyway, it was my sisters cause it was technically hers :)
