Finally got that salt tank...

Honestly I don't know what that is. There are sea slugs that eat leathers but they are not black. The pic in post #146 looks like there is one off the lether on the rock to the right. Any way you can remove that rock to get a closer look? If I had to guess, I would still point to a sponge but it's odd that they just popped up. I'll keep looking and if I come across something I'll let you know.

Well I found something in my rock between it and my leather today. I've got a huge brittle star in there. I actually have at least two that size which I just found and several smaller ones. They were munching on one of my hermits and I really want to get these things out of my aquarium ASAP.

Here's a picture of the hole he's hiding in. I tried to grab him and pull him out but no dice.

I guess I need a suggestion for a trap or something that eats them. :(

In better news my pep gave me a manicure today for the first time. That was pretty exciting! :)

Also my strange dark bumps are definitely part of my leather, I hope they aren't some type of coral disease :( do you guys think they could just be part of it molting?

Could be. Tough to trap a star as they can get in an out of most tight places. If he is still in that rock, take it out and out it in a bowl of water, put some meaty food off to the side and wait for it to come out.

Sorry I just don't have any personal experience with leathers. They could just be new polyps/branches.

I'd have to find a way to do that in the water stil as the leather and mushrooms that are on that rock can't be exposed to air. Or try and frag out the leather and mushrooms onto something else.

I've also found a third large star :(

I greatly appreciate any and all input Greech :)

Didn't realize the corals were on that rock. Could still be done but you would need a bigger bowl :). I wouldn't go cutting just to remove the stars.

Tough to gauge the size of the star from the pic but some panty hose or a fine mesh bag with some shrimp in it should work as bait in the display. If you can do it with lights out or dimmed that would probably work best. The mesh should entangle them long enough for you to reach in and grab them. You can try a plastic bottle with a small opening (like a soda bottle). Just don't let the food sit and degrade for too long.

Are they brittle or serpent stars?

Appears to be a serpent star. From what I can see it has burrowed a hole in the bottom of my leather, I saw one that looks the same with the remnants of one my hermit crabs in its clutches.

Yep they are opportunistic feeders and they are surprisingly quick.

What a little jerk....
I tried to tweeze him out, only managed to rip his arms off.

I have a bristle worm trap, maybe I can lure them into that.
