Finally re-starting my 72g bowfront!

Wow, you didn't need to go into that much detail, I was just looking for an overview (since you clearly do not like cichlids I was curious what you did like). But since you did.....

OK...... Are you sitting comfortably? Then I'll begin...........
Actually I am! My PC is hooked up to my TV and I sit on my couch and kick out the the recliner. :D

FW Tanks.
36g Bowfront - Sakura shrimp, Crystal red shrimp, habrosus, Chili Rasboras
Do you have successful shrimp breeding in this setup? cories or chilis eat a lot of babies? Do you have a not so ridiculous source for sakura?

SW tanks.
5g Tetra crescent - Catalina gobies
Awesome! Do you run a chiller?

There are plans to set up different tanks over the next week, so stock will be moving around and some tanks may be emptied.
I am surprised you have so many small and/or "show" tanks (bowfronts and such). With that many tanks I would expect a lot of the same size breeders for easy fitting. Are these spread out around the house or are most of them in one area?

Oh and it looks like I won't be making the meeting next month either. My friends want to go out to PA for our camping and quading trip on Thursday and I am throwing my bike in with theirs. Thankfully Rachel will be at JSAS and the konvenction in September so I won't miss her completely. :)

They breed but not necessarily as quickly as they might in a shrimp-specific setup. They originally came from Rachel but I've had them for a couple of years or more already. I seldom look elsewhere for livestock, but I saw some recently at a Lancaster county auction..

I know I should.... don't hate me. The tank is temporary to be honest, and it doesn't get terribly warm. But I am looking for a chiller (to keep them cool and to stop my excuses for not setting up a larger tank for them), They're captive bred, so should be more tolerant, but hopefully I can find a good deal on a chiller shortly, get them moved and then hopefully they might breed... time will tell.

you think this was planned???

The only place to put a lot of tanks (without risking the floor anyway) would be the basement, to convert an area of that to a fishroom would mean new electric would need to be run (There's a single outlet in the whole area), and some form of plumbing work would be needed. and I don't think we're quite ready for that yet.

time will tell... until then, I'll try breeding habrosus. :)

Yeah I wish we would stop going there already! It is too beautiful and cheap and the people are always so darn nice!

lol I was asking to see if (hoping) you had been successful in keeping them without a chiller. I don't know much about it because I have not gotten into SW yet but if you're handy I recall seeing some DIY ones where I believe they just ran a line through a freezer or fridge with some temp probes or something.

By "we're not quite ready for that yet" you mean you just haven't convinced them yet, right? :p: I'd be down there already! What I wouldn't do for an empty unfinished basement, it's perfect!

It's only been a couple of months, so I can't give a real first hand opinion.. But they seem happy + healthy at room temperature currently, but it's a small tank with nothing more than a small circulation pump and low powered LED lights, so hardly pushing any boundaries..

I've seen a bunch of DIY plans, there isn't really room for a fridge to sit next to the tank currently... But perhaps a kegerator and pumps that activate when the water is too warm???

The most interesting plans I've seen involved converting a dehumidifier.

But I think I want to play it safe and get something designed for aquarium usage, to avoid something a little too ugly for my tastes, or potentially leeching copper into the water.

Some of us are lucky enough to have a significant other that's just as much of an aquarist as they are.. and who, less than an hour ago, defined 'crazy fish people' based on the number of unused tanks in a house, in the middle of a talk about placement and stocking of a 120g tank.

The issue is really the installation of plumbing, and the trouble of upgrading the electrical supply and wiring a few circuits in the basement. It's not necessarily something we want to really deal with in the near future.

... But it is significantly cooler down there.... hmmmm

That's what I was referring to but a mini fridge instead of a kegerator (cheaper, usually quieter too).

That's a completely understandable concern!

 Again I understand not wanting to deal with that, not everyone is like me. I love projects, big and small! I am working on an aquarium one right now actually.

If it's going to look out of place, at least it can be filled with beer. ;)

if you pump water through the fridge constantly, you can just put the fridge itself on a temperature controller. That way you could avoid wild swings in water movement, or extra moving parts to the system.

I think I have enough on my hands right now without converting the basement... if you're ever looking for something to do though, I'll trade your time for some catfish.

lol Hmm, how many habrosus could I get for converting a basement!?!?!? :jaw-dropping:

Fridge - I didn't know if the fridge temp control would be enough, cool.

You were supposed to do it for the want of a new project.. but how many would you need? or how many could you raise in the manner to which they have become accustomed?

and the fridge would work, it's all a question of efficiency and control, having the water flow through a coil would help, submersing that coil would help even more.
