Fire belly newts..?

well it's a 50g.....darn goldfish but i was thinkin if i were to seperate the sides a bit with gravel to the point where some water is still trapped and the fish couldn't get in and the newts just lived on that part would it work then?

i've moved the fish into my pond but the bad thing is my parents won't let me bring anything else into the house. i have a bearded dragon and earlier i had to deal with stinking "presents" but that's taken care of now. and the filter i used before i transfered the goldfish was annoying and makes this splashing noise and wouldn't stop even after the break in period. i've had the fire belly newt before it just died. the color faded a bit and after like 2-3 yrs it just died

do newts absolutely need a filter instead of lots of plants?

what if you have a heavily vegitated tank with all the other requirements (the land and smooth bark or surfaces for crawling, etc...) would you still have to use a filter?

I'd like to unrecommend the Zoo Med 501 turtle filter. Its a type of low powered canister marketed (obviously) for turtle keepers. It doesn't have enough power to circulate the water in a 29 gallon tank filled 2/3 full. It's a shame, it certainly wasn't cheap and I did like the idea of an external filter that wouldn't raise my tank temp. I added a Fluvial 3 internal filter yesterday. So far, so good. The circulation is much, much better. I think it might be able to actually do some filtering.

Hey Green thanks for the review on that. I was actually thinking on getting one. But you know, for a smaller tank, such as a 20 long it might be a great filter. A nice slow moving one that doesnt bully the newts around.

Oh as Newts in planted tanks.. They love it. Heck, I would even send you some Duck weed if you like for free. :) I have plenty to share.

Well newt season is practically gone now and I could not find any Newts in Minnesota for sale this year. My local dealer could not find me any Eastern Newts and never got any other species in. Pretty sad about that, I have a few spare 10 gallons that I would liked to have done something like this with. Oh well maybe next spring.

Anyway, Lets hear some updates from everyone else who has some newt tanks.
Any new editions, or tradgedies? lets hear the stories folks.

Well, my four Eastern newts are still alive and well. They are alot of fun to watch. I guess being toxic gives them a sense of security. They don't flinch when you go right up to the glass. They don't even seem to mind having a trampoline in the room.

I spent some time experimenting with different cold water floating plants over the summer. Water hyacinth has cool bushy roots but it just grows too tall for lidded aquariums. Water lettuce and anacharis have worked well.
I added an amano shrimp and a few ramshorn snails to the tank. Some newt keepers are against all species mixing, but this combo seems to work. I also added some ghost shrimp but they quickly got eaten. I think the newts are eating the baby snails as well. The ramshorns lay clutch after clutch but none seem to make it too long.
