First Attempt at a "True" Tank

Well I've been looking around the forums and I saw a moss wall. I think I want to do one in my tank. How would I go about doing that? Is it too hard for a beginner?

you could do a moss wall. i'd start the moss growing on driftwood first because it grows fast and you'll have more to work with that way. i wouldn't add any large centerpeice fish if you like shrimp, they will hide all the time and get eaten. i'd just increase the school sizes so you have several of each.

I think I'm going to put in a school of Congo Tetras(6).

I would add some swordtails or guppies to your tank. If you have plants like your planning to do the fry should survive.

Well I was reading another thread, and I learned that Bettas are community fish when there are no other bettas. Would adding a Betta be in any way negative in this tank?

It all depends on the betta. While doing a water change today my betta jumped out of the breeder net in my 29 gallon into the main tank. He seems peaceful enough and is with guppies, swordtails, rams, and cories.

Anyone else know if a betta would work in this tank?

Okay i just got to the tank and i now know the real size. It's a 30 gallon tank, 30X12X18. I still like the idea of having a bunch of different schools of tetras with some shrimp what should my school sizes be?

Your initial idea of Cardinal, Neon, and Black Neon Tetras still works in a 30 gallon. 6-8 per school should be fine. You could still have a centerpiece fish such as a dwarf gourami, or a Betta (if you have a spare tank to rehome him if it doesn't work out). If you go with just your schools of tetras, then I'd suggest getting a nice Bristlenose Pleco or Corys as bottom dweller(s).

I have a betta in my community tank and he's doing fine. He largely ignored by the other fish, and ignores them back. I like how he looks in the planted tank, the flowing fins look very elegant. :)

If your tank is 30 gallon, your setup sounds kinda like mine. :) Are you going to do any bottom dwellers besides shrimp, like cories?
