Well.. I thought everything was going well with my 30 gallon hex tank.. I had 2 Bangai Cardinal fish, 2 clown fish and my cleaner shrimp... which has molted a few times already and was a pretty good size...

Anyway noticed last night that the shrimp was not alive.. took him out.. came home tonight to find both clown fish also dead.. my boys did not take kindly to this and are really upset.. I did an emergency water change with balanced salt levels and added a power head to the tank as well. (I noticed some red/brown algae growing). Anyway.. hoping the cardinal fish will be ok now..

I did take the water to be checked at Big Al's and they told me the ammonia level was somewhat high, but didn't give me any recommendations other than reduce the feeding.. after I called back with the news my 2 clowns were dead was when the mentioned the water conditioner and water change...

I'll keep you guys informed how things go... :( :help:

No Skimmer? Any pics of algae? Slimy algae?DOnt know how long tank has been running but very odd to find ammonia spikes but no nitrite spike in well established tank.
You should do your own testing, rather than rely on lfs. Sonner you are able to determine water parameters, sooner you can deliver the solution w/o delays.

Pics would be nice.

How high was the ammonia? How long was the shrimp left in the tank after it died? Do you have a cleanup crew? +1 to your own testing but you should get you water tested again somehow to see how well your WC worked to lower ammonia.

How do you feed your tank and how much? Broadcast feedings combined with a dead shrimp that stayed in the tank too long may have been an issue. How long do you normally go betwenn WCs?

Sorry guys..

I have a 30 gallon hex tank.. 30lbs of live rock.. a canister filter and a power head..

I change the water every week or so.. I now did buy my own strips to test the water.. My ammonia is back to normal, but my nitrates are a bit high..

I was feeding the 4 fish twice a day (as recommended by the aquarium store), but now after I talked with them they told me to only feed every other day and only frozen food, no flakes..

My snails, hermit crabs and Bangai Cardinals seem to be ok.. although just before all this happened we noticed the Bangai male seemed to be holding eggs in his mouth.. no more.. (the eggs were gone just before the clowns died)...

Do I need a skimmer?

Skimmer is a must IMO. especially with SW.
