Fish and water reptiles?

How big was the newt you caught? I know that the Taricha species naturally occurs in the west, but I'm not off handly familiar with other Western species. www.caudata.com is an awesome site on salamanders and newts.
Great idea to keep the guys separated. I do love the amphibians!

He was about four or five inches long, I haven't seen many that were that big, but they are everywhere in the woods. Where we caught him, the only decent water sources were puddles, and the lake was a fairly good distance from where he was, so I'm not sure what the little fella (whom we lovingly named Gloop) was doing so far from any water source.

And tricksterpup, I'll definatly be looking at that link, since I'm sure I'll need help aquascaping it so it'd be good for both kinds of critters.

Definately turtles need more space and alot of care. I opted for non-water tortoises...the 6 X 4 foot enclosure we had for our 8 in tort was totally way too small. They would need a ton more filtration, as keeping them in a small tank isn't appropriate for the amount of waste they emit.

Anything else I'd say is repetitive, just thought I'd throw in another opinion.

If you decide on ADF's Leopardess has written a great article on them, in the article section. I keep them with the fish listed below, which in my set-up works, though in others may not.

As for the site, I think its one of the best that we have on newts. We talk about filtration, species care, and landscaping.

Another idea,

I have created a vivarium with 3 White Clouds and 3 Danios (these are very hardy fish). They live in a custom modified 29G tank with 5 Firebelly Toads. Yes they are poisonous but it has not affected the fish for over two years now. They are very brighly colored (bright reds on the White Clouds) and eat all the time.

Now, I did lose one fish in the very begining, a White Cloud. But it was not due to the toads poisons, it was dinner.

The total H2O volume is close to 6 gallons with a Fluval 3 filtering and powering the water fall.

See here for pics

Just another option to mingle with.

Good Luck
