I have a faulty Bio-Wheel filter that has been making excessive mechanical noise for a while. I unplugged to attempt to repair it, replacing it temporarily with an air pump based filter. Later, I noticed that my panda corys, who usually just lie around doing nothing at this time of day, became suddenly very active. Is it possible that the noise was bothering them, or am I making a huge stretch and the whole situation is just a coincidence?

excessive noise and/or vibrations will stress fish out, just like if someone left the light on 24 hours a day. the noise might be from a faulty impeller which either needs replacing or cleaning and it could be trapped air bubbles.

icecubez189 is right. Thats why it is recommended not to tap on the glass. It is about 10 times louder in the tank when you tap the glass then outside the tank. From what I understand, Marineland (the company who makes the filter) has great over the phone service, and will even give you the parts you need to fix the filter.
