fish dying in just 1 hour

Get Prime for your dechlorinator, a very small amount can treat a large amount of water giving you more bang for your buck.

Jeez... ignore a thread for a couple hours and all heck breaks out... lol

The tank is uncycled Karl. Two weeks is a bad estimate as well. It will take as long as it takes if you do a fishless cycle Dave. A test kit and good water conditioner (like Prime) will be your best friends in starting back up right. Feel free to post any questions. I've been there...

I was addressing the idea that a tank needs to "stand" for two weeks. As you say, fishlessly cycling takes as long as it takes. But there is a long standing piece of misinformation around that leaving the tank set up but with no ammonia source (or any attention at all) somehow "matures" it ready for a fishy cycle. It was this that I was addressing. The post I responded to seemed to be implying you had to do this to dechlorinate.

Gotcha. I just wanted things to be as clear as possible for the OP. Often times we go off on tangeants and it can become confusing.
