Fish Nazi at LFS

I had simular situation when i was first shopping for my set up so I just left . I returned a day later with a receipt of 1200 plus dollars from a close by lfs. the best part was the look on the owners face when he saw me talking to his employee. I can only imagine what it was like in there once i left

Now that's funny..but pretty low.

"Here is the money you might have made for simply doing what I asked..."

Somehow I missed this thread 4 years ago, so I'm gonna go ahead and chime in now LOL. There's a HUGE difference between LFS workers providing ACCURATE information and educating customers when it's asked for, versus telling you what to do and refusing a sale based on their own perceptions. If an employee of ANY establishment talks to me as if they're in any position to make my decision for me, I'm going to be livid.

When I get probed like that (it has happened, but not often) my response is "community fish. lots of different fish. 6 xyz's please" the idea of leaving and coming back to avoid confrontation is appauling. You're the customer!

Now that the thread's been resurrected, I'll chime in too. I think the "understand that he's a teenager and possibly mad at the world" approach would have worked. A little education could have been helpful. He probably didn't understand that there can be a large behavioral difference between different species of fish with a common family name (i.e. cichlids, rainbows, etc.). As a matter of fact, many of these fish aren't even in the same order, let alone genus. I just finished re-homing three of my black banded rainbows (Melanotaenia nigrans) after they went feral and killed a dwarf gourami, three other Rainbows, two neons, 2 peppered coreys, a blue ram, and a Kribensis. Given that, I would have classified that particular species of rainbow as at least Semi-aggressive, if not flat out aggressive. On the other hand I can't imagine that happening with something like a school of threadfins or celebes.

except the name I have also had bad experiences with bigger chains such as Petco. See what happened is I had a Peacock that I didn't want anymore because he was to aggressive and didn't have the money to get him his own 55gal so I brought him to Petco. There were like 10people standing around doing nothing and I was like "Can I sell this"?

The guy said wow what type of fish is this that?
He called over his friend and his friend was like that's a Oscar.
I was like no it's not a Oscar!!
He was like what is it then.
I explained it was a peacock cichlid.
He said "Those are mean and aggressive we won't take it"
So I just went back home and put him back in the tank.
I love how I have more knowledge on fish then the workers do and I'm 14!

Sometimes talking to store employees is like talking to telemarketers on the phone, you have to say the right words or few words to get the right buttons pushed.

Coincidentally I was in WalSmart today and they got in a new batch of big Hover fish, you know the ones that look like green and yellow Polka-dot helicopters. Anyway asked a middle aged employee if he worked there and he only shrugged his shoulders at me, not a good sign, so I asked a asked a lady employee who was wearing keys and a radio, she said "yes but you have to ask that man over there". So she took me over to the man and he shrugged at her and said " I don't do fish or know how".

So then we are all there and she is struggling to catch the Hover Fish I want and is talking on the radio explaining to the big boss why she is not at her location becasue she is doing fish training, but she cant catch them either. So I take the net from her hand kindly explaining to her that I'm an expert and can do this quickly for her.

The net they had was so tiny that the Hover Fish actually say 1/2 out of the new but I got them quickly, she left and let the guy bag them. I asked him please not to tie the knot in the end of the bag too tightly but he smiled and bared down on the knot until it almost disappeared and said "I work here and gotta do my job for you right" In a weird perturbed sort of way. But I got my Hover fish I wanted for $4 each and was on my way.

Moral of the story, choose your words and actions wisely like a serpent to get the right buttons pushed ASAP.

I'd rather see nazi fish people who know more about fish than the average pet store employee. But it would be really annoying for them to refuse to sell you fish because they think they're right, when they're not.

Do you have the species name? I don't think I've ever heard of a Hover fish..

lol, sounds like a leopard fish, light brown with dark brown spots...

I am just ticked off that a kid could be so sure of themselves with out any evidence other than a species is supposedly "incompatible"

I'll add my story as well since this has been revived:)

I went to a box store to get a guppy for my invert tank. I was going to get 2 but decided to just get one to try it out. I ask the lady to get me a guppy. She then went on to tell me that guppies were schooling fish and I should get more. I told her one would do for now. Then she asked if I was using aquarium salt because guppies needed it. I lied and said yes. Then she asked me what size tank I had and what was in it. I told her it was a 5 gallon and I had snails. She laughed and said just snails? I told her yes and she laughed at me but I got my guppy.

I was fine with her asking about my tank and all but the odd thing is in all the times I have bought mbuna NO ONE has asked me what tank they were going in or what was in it. And I'm pretty certain mbuna are way more aggressive than guppies.

Hover Fish. Actually they are mostly yellow with black dots and green florescent heads and eye pupils. They move hover like helicopters and shaped like a balloon tied at one end.

Im trying to get a photo in my tank and the name to post on the species area if they have one here. It not a cichlid it looks saltwater but is fresh
