Fish Nazi at LFS

Aww, maybe you were a little too harsh on him. If that were me you'd been talking to, I probably would have gotten awfully flustered and felt like crap for the rest of the day. But then again, I have a little more tact than that guy apparently had, so the situation probably would have been entirely circumvented by my relatively superior linguistic skills. ^_^

sorry . . . it is a word it has to do with words, which despite thier original definition become commonly defined as something else- or something related , once it's a coloquialism it's acceptable

ah....I'm following ya but what makes the word defined as something else final though.... I mean how long does it have to be used as something different for it to become "coloquial" (is that the word?).... society?

wow this thread went off topic. As for the Nazi refrnece I dont see a problem with it. We have an LFS here that an old lady runs out of her basement. Best fish around and great prices but dont make her mad or tell her shes wrong cause she wont sell to you if you do. Anyway because of this she has earned the nick name Fish Nazi around here with the local hobbyists and no one has ever complained.
That kid didnt have a right to tell you no to the fish of to void the warrenty cause he wasnt the owner but I dont think I would have been quite that rude maybe if I was in a real bad mood.

Well this is what Webster says:

Main Entry: col·lo·qui·al
Pronunciation: k&-'lO-kwE-&l
Function: adjective
1 : of or relating to conversation : CONVERSATIONAL
2 a : used in or characteristic of familiar and informal conversation

but an oxford definition would probably give more backround and the general limitations you're looking for . . . if they only shared they're precious definitions online!

so i don't know what the time frame, social acceptance, or frequency of use must be for it to be enstated as a colloquialism (i was missing an l) oops!

There are no rules for things like that. Language is always shifting and ever changing. Linguistically, there are no rules provided that meaning and communication is acheived. There are no "inferior" dialects and no "wrong" words - unless meaning is broken. And, as far as I've seen, the usage of Nazi as indicated here has been around for quite some time and is common. The Soup Nazi has already been mentioned a lot; there's a reason they did that, though it helped popularize it.

As for the OEDs (Oxford english dictionary) entry, it was uncharacteristically subpar. They actually included some form of the root word in every definition.

Here is a definition of Nazi that they list:

" b. hyperbolically. A person who is perceived to be authoritarian, autocratic, or inflexible; one who seeks to impose his or her views upon others. Usu. derogatory.

1982 P. J. O'ROURKE in Inquiry 15 Mar. 8/3 The Safety Nazis advocate gun control, vigorous exercise, and health foods. 1995 Independent 3 Nov. (Suppl.) 8/2 According to Hutchins, current fitness theory is peddled by ‘nazis’. Aerobics Nazis. 2000 Minx Aug. 71/2, I learned to be more open and not such a Nazi in the studio."

I've included its first known usage. 1982. So yes, it is acceptable.

Whew! I'm glad Leopardess came in and cleared that up once and for all. :coffee2: :)

Same thing happened to me. I went to get a blue ram, and the guy didn't want to sell them to me. He looked about 15 (I'm 13). Said the ram would kill my community fish. He said that since they were cichlids, they would be very aggressive and kill my other fish. He also said that my bichir (which is in a different tank than the community) would eventually get up to 3-4 feet long.

I guess its better than them not trying to help at all and net any fish I point at.
