All of my fish except the plec are swimming at the glass. They aren't jumping. They're just swimming at the glass all the time. What is the deal? I tested the water and the nitrates are 40 in one tank which I'm working to lower, and there are hardly any in the other. Ammonia is 0, nitrites 0, the test strips say 6.4 but I don't believe that, and the test strips say the total hardness is 120. I don't know if I trust these test strips. But why are my fish doing this?

what kind of fish do you have?
are they schooling fish? maybe just one fish is doing it and the rest are just following? Or maybe they just like it? I don't think it's something to worry about. If they're swimming ok, no noticiable diseases and they're eating, i wouldn't worry.

My guppies loves to swim by the glass alot. It seem to enjoy it.

I'm transferring one fish everyday to a new aquarium. Fish in both, I just realized, are going through environmental changes. So I guess this behavior will stop once they all get in the new aquarium and get used to their new surroundings.

they could be looking for their "friends" that have just mysteriously vanished. so what they think is another fish of their own species is really just a reflection

What type/size fish are they and what size tank do you have. this usually happens if the tank is to small. My black skirts and cory's did it when I got them it's just the environment change. Is there a lot of activity in the room that might attract them? maybe they are mooching for food.

not something i'd worry about.

When I get new fish they do that for a week and then I guess they realize its just glass and they stop doing it.

Some fish just don't do well in captivity and run at the glass. That's why great white sharks have never been kept in captivity longer than a week; they either die from stress or beat themselves to death on the sides of their tank.
