i just got a 30 gallon tank and was wondering if my table can hold up 350 pounds? it is a metal table with a thick 2 inches of really hard wood on top. is it necessary to get a real aquarium stand or will mine work? it is not bowing or anything but the metal that its made of is pretty thin with about 3 layers.

I have kept aquariums as much as 25 gallons on tables and pieces of furniture that are not made for an aquarium and I can tell you from experience that in time with all of the water weight they did start to bow. I ended up buying the stands for them anyway. Save yourself the trouble and aggrivation of having to drain an established aquarium and set it back up again and just get a proper aquarium stand.

I would just spend the money on a nice aquarium stand, and if you are interested in getting another aquarium, you can find double layered stands to hold both. The really nice ones are made by Penn-Plax

It shouldn't bow if the corners of the aquarium sit squarely atop the 4 legs of the table and the legs are nice and sturdy. I have a 20g on a side table that has 4x4 for legs and about 2" thick top. It's very stable. As long as it's the legs supporting the aquarium, and not some horizontal board, I shouldn't think it would be a problem. Some of the aquarium stands they sell, though adequate, pales in comparison to my side table in terms of sturdiness. You can go take a look at the wood or metal aquarium stands in stores and see if your table compares well with those or not. Of course, your table shouldn't be lightweight, sway or can be easily tipped over.

If you want to use a table, make sure that it is reinforced first. The last thing you want is an accident with water everywhere and little fishies that are carpet surfing.

metal, as in steel?
if this is a std metal framed with a wood top 2"??

you should have no issues
check to see if it's steel
what dimensions are the legs? if you are running angle iron or tube, square ?

its is a rectangle and there are no foots but the whole thing is kind of a metal sheet on the sides and the back there is a seperate one for the bottom.

its surprising how much a piece of furniture can hold. i have a 20 on the most ricketey looking nightstand. i think you will totally be fine. especially if its metal. just make sure the bolts/screws/nails whatever are in good shape first.
