FishDataBase Idea

For ease, rather than assigning serial numbers for compatibility, you'd be better off grouping fish, and then assigning a number to the group. From the example above, instead of listing a 1 for all fish that are compatible with goldfish, you'd establish a group that is compatible, and they'd all get the same group number. So, rather than a table with a record for each individual pairing, you'd have one column in the species information table with either single numbers or pairs*, and then a table defining the groups (ie, group 1: tetras including neons, serpae, harlequins, cories, bristlenose etc, group 2: top minnows including red tail sharks, albino sharks, rainbow sharks, common pleco, group 3: African cichlids including brichardi but excluding Lake Malawi cichlids, common plecos, bristlenose). This gives you a more compact structure, and species can be included into mulitple groups within one record. You get a better return as well--the whole list of compatible fish would be generated automatically, rather than from a grouping query.

*I would establish 10 basic groups, 0-9, and then allow for 027 to indicate that a species is compatible with groups 0, 2, and 7. Easier for the system to handle.

very good idea, although i might have taken your idea the wrong way. Regardless i got a very crude database and site going. So far all you can do is create/browse/view fish. But it gives a place to start from. I sort of took alot of the categories and types from AC's specie profile( hope thats alright? ). But check out the very rough demo and lets me know what kind of suggestions you have so far.

I'll work on it alittle bit more later, i really should be doing my programming final project instead but this is more fun

Well ive finally finished my programming final project so i have some time on my hands to complete what ive started. I realize keeping the server private really gets me no where cause noone will see it to comment on it. So ill put it online but may take it offline when im playing my xbox online :dance2: ... Anyway the address is http://virtualtank.has-my.info/ ...

Heres some quick questions to some people with a decent knowledge with fish..
  • Will pH levels for fish usually keep to a certain range? Let me try to elaborate, instead of giving someone the option to pick the high ph level and low ph level. Will most fish fall into an ideal range? So you would just need to pick the range (ie: 3-6, 5-7, 6-8, etc.. )
  • Is there any more information in create a fish that i should add?

Please feel free to comment on anything people. Im making this in the hopes that someone will adopt it one day to run it. The main goal is to see examples of stocking suggestions to remove the oh so common "what can i put in a XX gallon tank". Maybe later on people can create a virtual tank and have people suggest what kind of other fish could be added to it.

I also need to figure out if i want to switch the development from php to .NET before i get too far into it. I've done alot of cool stuff with .NET and it would make my life easier but more of hassle if anybody ever wanted to run this thing. Oh well enjoy and please, i cannot stress enough to comment on this. And if you think its a waste of my time, let me know :thm:

Well....I'm dont' have a clue as to how to program anything....but there is one thing I noticed that I could add...

in the PH and temp catagory....you forgot neutral PH and medium temp range.....but, maybe those aren't necessary......

My head was spinning trying to read all that info you folks are batting around here ! lol..

Dont worry about trying to understand the info. You dont need to know programming to help. I realize i did completely skip the temperature. But could you explain where neutral pH would go???

:OT:
On a side note, i like the fact that someone attempted to hack my server last night. To that person - next time you try to hack someones computer, dont use windows exploits trying to hack a linux box. What do you gain out of hacking my computer anyway? Pathetic...

Well, I was thinking you had a catagory for PH....high PH and low PH.....but there is the neutral PH....7.0....I believe there are some species and (dare I add....) plants....who do better in the neutral PH situations as opposed to high or low...but I guess it doesn't really matter because most species will adjust to almost anything.

I'm guess with the difficulties of just figuring how to do this with fish....that getting a similar system going for aquatic plants would just be adding a bit much....lol.... :p:

Actually i dont think it would be that difficult to add plants in as well. They can carry on some of the same aspects and im not really sure what would be that much different besides adding things like if its rooted or stems, etc.. But hey throw me some categories for plants and ill work on it :dance2:
