FishDataBase Idea

Well it might not look like i did very much to the site but actually i redid the whole backend. Its so much cleaner and easier to work with now and will help me in the long run if smaller pieces need to be changed.

ANYWAY....

Emg: I added a very rough "create plant" section. What do you think? I know you mentioned a few things that i did not add such as fert needs and root/leaf feeders. What would be options for fert needs? and is there only root or leaf feeders? Also about your suggestion about using neutral for the ph values, I wanted the site to check to make sure some of the data is legatimite so i have it check to make sure that ph values are a number. Then it checks to make sure the lowPH level is not greater than the high ph level. So if i added the word neutral it would mess up that part :pc:

With plants should i also give each plant its own pH, temp, and water type(fresh, salt, brackish)? I noticed on plantgeek they dont track that stuff except if the plant can be put in brackish water.

I've also been thinking about adding a spot for fish that would suggest if they are plant friendly. So later when you create a "virtual tank" it would warn about fish that would be harmful to plants. But then ive heard people talk about plants that taste so bad to the fish that they wont eat it. So maybe there should be a flag for the plants too.

Well i hope to get more of this running asap. so please, try it out, dont be afraid to create fish and plants. and comment :)

Well, some plants like water sprite have a very shallow root system and feed mostly from the leaves....wysteria is the same...and they are really good plants for sucking up nitrates and phosphates and stuff you don't want in your aquarium...except to feed the plants...lol...

Others are stem plants that feed mostly from the root and require root based ferts...like those fert sticks...and also a better quality substrate.

The fresh vs. saltwater plants are an idea I hadn't thought of...lol....but that would be good to have a list of those plants for the fresh, salt and brackish tanks. Not sure how many plants there actually are for marine tanks though...I think corals and inverts take the place of plants in a marine tank....not sure though since I YET to have a marine tank...

Don't forget the foreground...midground...background catagory.........I'm not that familiar with the fert requirements of aquatic plants...but I think some prefer more iron and such than others....Maybe there's someone here with more knowledge in that area that can help out....who's that guy...."plantman"?? I forget his name here, but he's quite knowledgeable in those issues.

OH...and lighting requirements....low, medium, high and how many watts per gallon would provide the appropriate range..........hmm...would it be easier to just have a list of the more familiar sized tanks...such as 10, 20, 29, 55 and so on and just have a graph of sorts with LOW being one column....MED another...etc...with the amount of wattage required to equal a Low, Med or high lighted tank listed in the appropriate column...........Jeesh....I'm confusing myself here !!! LOL ! YOu getting any of this???? cause I'm not sure I am !  :duh:

You could make an excel document that can compair all this

Emg: as far as the root/stem feeders thing goes again, wouldnt that be classified by the type of plant it is to begin with? If the type of plant is a stem plant, wouldnt it be a stem feeder? or root feeder would be rhizone or rosette?

I think im going to leave the plant part alone until i completely get the fish part going. Theres enough rough data from the plant section to be benefitial. That and i might have thrown myself in a corner about freshwater/saltwater since i made a few dumb abbrevations that could potential interfere with water types  So although you can still add saltwater fish i think im going to gear this more towards a freshwater/brackish only database until i finish or until someone yells at me to make it include saltwater.

I just started working on the "virtual tank" parts, so now comes all the fun restriants to try to make sure all the fish are compatible. So far i just got it to weed out all the fish that dont meet the tank specifications(size,ph,temperature). After the person picks a fish ill then try to add logic in to figure out whats compatible with what.

Lol Sivic...sounds like your having lots of fun.....

I won't yell at you Siv....I think it's really neat you going to the trouble, but for computer geeks I guess something like this is playtime...like me cleaning my tanks...lol....

Don't worry about the plant thing....for another time maybe...I would think just working out the fish issues would be enough for anyone ! :dive:
