fishless tank?

Please don't come in late in the thread and post a suggestion which is poor fish husbandry to the very core. Responsible fish husbandry involves keeping fish healthy, a QT serves to protect the existing stock from diseases and parasites that could be imported by new fish. Keeping some of those fish, no matter what their species, as guinea pigs is poor practice, more so because so many better options are available.

I like the sponge filter idea
After you use it in the QT, make sure you sterlize it before putting it back in the main tank. Maybe that's obvious, but thought I'd bring it up anyway. Don't want to bring any diseases back into the main tank.

not in my opinion. yes, it'll result in ammonia but it will also pollute your tank and make a helluva mess. what i do is keep a sponge filter in one of my cycled tanks along with the regular filter .. when you need a cycled tank for QT, simply take this mature sponge filter and place it in the new/Q tank.

I'm not trying to hijack this thread but I thought that I'd add that I'm having a heck of a time finding sponge filters. I've looked at my local mom and pop store as well as Petsmart. Then I tried to order some from Drs. Foster and Smith and they've been on backorder for almost six weeks. Good luck finding some, maybe it's just me.

You are having hard luck finding the sponges or a specific filter? The sponges can be any variety of sponge. I use Fluval sponges and Aquaclear Sponges. Many other varieties of filters have their own sponges that can easily be cut to fit any shape you want.

A sponge filter can be as easy as an Aquaclear sponge, some tubing and an air pumpFor a QT it doesn't have to be pretty.

I've been looking for the ones that have a sponge on some kind of tube that you stick the airline in, I guess. I can't seem to find them.
