Floating Betta

I really want to know where the pea remedy came from. I had a long talk with one of my professors at school, he's an ichthyologist among other things, and he was quite adamant about not giving vegetable matter to fish with swim bladder problems. In fact, he said it could CAUSE the swim bladder problems.

If anyone knows where I can find it, I’d like to see something better than a fish enthusiasts website about how to treat swim bladder problems in bettas. Recommend a book, fish journal, a reputable website … anything. I want more proof than, “I did it for my fish and it worked” darn it!!

Jinx, he also said to be on the lookout for parasites.

Good point jaylin.
I believe that peas have been recomended here for Constipation and Not for swim bladder.

I will be interested in any references you get.

I feed peas as an occassional food source, have never had to treat a constipated fish lol.

I have never before now Had a fish who liked peas.
I have always fed Some vegetables though and have never had a fish develop swim blader problems. I would like to know more about that connection.

Interesting comments! What IF my betta has parasite, how can I tell?
All I know is Buoy (floating betta) looks bigger than my other betta that I had before summer started.
BW ... ahh I should have known better :dance2: I have some here. I have small variety of fishy food here :thm:

I've never had to treat a consitpated fish either LOL! From what I've managed to read, the consitpation is a catalyst for the swimbladder problem. The intestines get backed up and press on the swimbladder ... but, I got the impression from my professor that it's the veggies that cause the constipation. If I can round him up, I'll ask him more details about that. (This proff is a slippery sucker. He's hard to catch and I'm not in any of his classes this semester ... )

Jinx, I'm wondering if we should look for something that will take care of parasites and treat for that anyway. I don't think we have a lot to lose by trying. We can't keep fasting him. He'll starve to death. Poor Bouy!!!

Oh, and I feed and have always feed freeze dried bloodworms to my bettas and haven't had any problems with them. I've only had one have the swimbladder problem and he ... died the first night I noticed it. So I'm not even sure it was swimbladder. (And I couldn't even tell you how many bettas I've had over the years ... )

maybe you should quit feeding the freeze dried stuff? Is there a chance the freeze dried food is expanding it its stomach and bloating the fish? Just a thought

Freeze dried shouldn't cause problem if you feed right amount. I'm not too sure about bloating part, if it does occurs, it would cause problem if you're over feeding. Buoy is still floating slightly. I have no idea what else I can do but let it live as long as it can. It still eats though.

Alright alright, :thud: I'll go out and buy one of those parasite tabs thingy and see if it helps if it does... then i know its parasite/bacteria whatever... Will get some tomorrow then.

It seemed that my betta could not tolerate any amount of freeze dried food, since I stopped feeding him any, hes never had any buoyancy problems since
