Guys, I am looking to make the switch from 2 power filter systems to a canister type. I think I have narrowed it down between the Rena XP2 and the Fluval 305. Which one do you guys recommend?

what size tank is it? what inhabitants will be in it?

honestly, either one would be fine. although i don't use canisters, my friends have them and i prefer the FilStar XP2 both in terms of price and ease of use.

Sorry, it will be in a 50 gallon tank with 6 African Cichlids and 1 plecost..

Also, if I bought a package of either model at the store, would it have EVERYTHING required to get it up and running, or would I need to purchase anything more?

The way I get the best out of Fluvals all you need extra is a bunch of loose filter floss. I have not used Renas because Fluvals have always been great for me and I have heard that the Fluvals are a step up from Renas.

fluval filter

WHat ever you do make sure it has a self primer. Otherwise get ready for having dirty aquarium water in your mouth when you try to get the thing started again. :(

I have and XP3 on my 55 african tank and it works great. It comes with everything you need and is self priming. A good buddy has a fluval 404(old model) on his 55 african tank and loves it as well. We've had them both about the same time and neither have had problems. Both are quiet. I would just go with the XP3 or 405, whichever one you can get cheaper. If you can afford Eheim a lot of people swear by them.

go with EHEIM. it's the best. just my 2 cents

Eheim, eheim, eheim, eheim all the way. I really like eheims. They are super efficient and thier performance is outstanding. Really quiet too. I like eheims! Did I mention that I like eheims.
