Hey just bought a used Fluval 305 canister filter, however its missing a lock nut and the 4 sponges, also will need longer hoses.

Was just looking to see if anyone knows of the best (aka cheapest) place to go to buy the items I am missing. Or if their is a cheaper solution to buying the actual Fluval name brand sponges...dont know if those spaces could be filled with something better or just as good?

The main point is I am from Ontario, Canada, so keep in mind shipping costs.

Thanks in advance!

check ebay often lots of fluval filter parts are listed.

can do!

what about compatible parts? do the older model parts work with the 305? for example are the ribbed hose and lock nuts the same parts for the 304 as the 305?

what about using some vinyl hose I saw at home depot? instead of buying the brand name hose? and then possibly make a spray bar?

I'm using some DIY tubing right now on my 304. Get the 5/8"ID thick wall braided hose pictured below. You need the thick wall for the aquastop nuts to work, and it's nearly kink proof. For a spray bar, take a look at this thread for ideas and work from there.

thats perfect! thank you very much! I saw that hose yesterday at home depot and was considering it or the black vinyl hose, but i figured the black vinyl would kink over time.

I will still need to buy one lock nut then to fasten the hose, unless i just used a hose clamp for the one side...

I would say that a hose clamp would work. The tubing is extremely hard to get on in the first place, so I think a simple hose clamp would do. Make sure to test the connecting thoroughly with a 5gal pail of water before using it on your tank.

yes, good idea!

What about a spray bar, how simple would that be to make and attach to the hose? what would be the best connection?
