I have a Fluval 305 canister filter, which I'd thougth would be a good (and easy to use) canister filter. I'd like a bit of info if anyone has it...

1--Since I haven't seen anywhere else than Petsmart that carries it, I'm beginning to wonder if it is not a good brand?

2--I've watched the CD, I've looked around online... how am I supposed to know how much to put in the trays?

(what I have, and have had... in there.. is... ceramic rings in the lowest tier, Matrix stones for biofilter in the middle, and then water polishing pads in the top along with amonia remover)

Pretty much... ...I have the feeling that I'm doing this at least partly wrong... all the trays are filled completely.

i have this canister, loving it, its a good filter, i use 1.5l of seachem matrix and 1 bag of the ring that came with it, using 3 bags of carbon. planning to use purigen :)

I have tons of space to put in, and I only use polyester, cotton, and the like... I'm kinda too lazy for the carbon and media lol. It's cause you gotta pop open the canister lid, pour out the water, it's heavy, ya kno, kinda like a hassle imo...hang on back on the other hand I think it's easy come and easy go. But overall canister filters are quite efficient. Works greatly on the mechanical filtration, biological and chemical filtration.

Bottom tray crammed with polyester pillow stuffing. Other trays filled with your choice of biological media (Fluval's Biomax, Seachem's Matrix, Eheim's whatchacallit, etc.). No carbon (see article in my blog as to why carbon is not good for aquariums).

I have your exact filter and am happy to say it has been great for the nearly year and a half I've had it. It's quiet and reliable. Since the flow is through 4 sponge pads even before water gets to the trays I dont use any sponges in there. I have the ceramic rings that came with it in the bottom 2 trays with floss in the top but I also have a filter pad over the sponges on the intake side. That single addition cleared my water like nothing else.

The only thing I don't like about this canister is getting the top off.

I really like this filter and I think many of the negative reports on the Fluval brand was for the '04 series and not the '05.

I run two of these filters on my 240 litre tank. They're very good.

The easiest way to get the top off the filter is to insert a coin into the slot where the top meets the bottom, and twist it. The movement breaks the vacuum seal and the lid comes off smoothly!

i think that filling up the media baskets all the way to the top isn't a bad thing, but it may reduce some of the flow through the filter.

anyways, i have a 205 and a 405. the bottom trays are both filled with pre-filter ceramic rings, then the middle trays are filled with biomax and matrix, and on top i have been using polishing pads.
