Foods besides "goldfish food" for goldies?

I'm planning to get some fancy goldfish before long, and after reading up a bit bit on goldfish food, I'm not entirely thrilled with the nutrition breakdown in most of the foods in my price range. So I was wondering, are there any other types of food that would work?
I was thinking maybe Ken's Vegetable sticks (broken in smaller bits of course) from kensfish.com, or maybe one of his other lower protein foods.

Goldfish need approx. 75% plant material (algae, plants, veggies, spirilina, etc) and 25% protein (bloodworms, bugs, etc are good). Goldfish food at fish stores is one of the worst things to feed Goldfish, in my opinion. I've yet to come across a commercially prepared food for Goldfish that was actually good for them-not saying it doesn't exsist.

Yeah, that's why I was asking if something that's not marketed for goldfish would work.

If you're willing to put a little more effort into feeding your fish than just throwing a can into a shopping cart, I've heard really fantastic things about the Mazuri gel foods. Many public aquariums use the Mazuri foods (they make gel kits for everything from lions to porcupines to orangutans, besides their fish food).

The nice thing about making your own gel food is that you can vary the ingredients to adjust the protein content, the amount of roughage, and add treats in like shrimp, bloodworms, fruit and vegetables.

I feed my fish a staple diet of Omega One pellets, but I usually give them some romaine lettuce, freeze dried bloodworms, brine shrimp, etc to supplement.

Ok, thanks. :)

Someone on another site just promised me a recipe for homemade gel food for goldies. :D

I only feed New Life Spectrum and the results are exactly what they should be. The quality is as good as it gets in commercial foods so far, they love it, and it sinks. It is all high quality, easily digested ingredients. If you can check it out and give it a shot, even if you have to buy it online it is worth it.

... I'm starting to wonder if you're on the New Life Spectrum payroll

Seriously though, from reading your posts in other threads it sounds good, but it's not available locally and what I've been finding online for it is a bit out of my price range.

I think I've decided on going with a mix of a couple non-goldie specific foods like the vegetable sticks and some homemade gel food to supplement it (plus fresh veggies that I'll have around anyways).

I have heard of two foods that have produced the same results (according to other people) as NLS, Pro-Gold and homemade gel foods. Those are the three best options for goldfish diet. They need good food. NLS is a tad expensive, but it is worth it. Because of the quality of it they don't need to eat as much so it lasts longer than other foods do.

Do you have a link to that veggie stick food so we can see how it compares?

http://www.kensfish.com/kenssticks.html It's about halfway down the page.

Here's the breakdown to make it easier:
INGREDIENTS: MIXTURE OF PLANTS AND VEGETABLES INCLUDING: SEAWEED, SPIRULINA, CARROTS, SQUASH, SPINACH. VEGETABLE OILS, SOY MEAL, YEAST, WHEAT FLOUR, VITAMIN & MINERAL SUPPLEMENT. ASORBIC ACID (SOURCE OF VITAMIN C). NATURAL AND SOME ARTIFICIAL COLORING.

GUARANTEED ANALYSIS: CRUDE PROTEIN 35.0% MIN., CRUDE FAT 7.0% MIN., CRUDE FIBER 7.0% MAX., MOISTURE 8.0% MAX., ALL NATURAL INGREDIENTS, EXCEPT FOR SOME ARTIFICIAL COLORING. NO PRESERVATIVES

I'd also be using something else with a bit of meat in it too, haven't entirely decided on which one though.

I don't like the artificial colors at all, but every thing else seems fine.

Please consider one of those three foods listes, it will be worth it and the best options for your goldfish.
