I just got back from the LFS and someone had brought in some discus because they were moving. Two of the employees took some home and one was left. They gave it to me. I have it in a 55 right now I did a fifty percent water change before I put it in and cranked the heater up to 84. He is with three severums, three silver dollars, four giant danios and a channel cat. All fish are smaller than him. I boiled about two cups of peat moss and put it in the filter to lower the pH. Is there anything else I can do? He is very skinny and the guy at the LFS said they had had them 24 hours and they had not eaten, although I guess that is expected. I really want this fish to make it. Please help with any suggestions.

I would try and give him away. Your tank is really stocked, particularely with a cat that'll get to be 2.5 feet. Unless you take everything out except for the dollars, I'd try and just give him to someone. I'd also drop the temp. to 82. He'll be fine with that and the other fish won't get so stressed out. Try feeding frozen brine shrimp. This is a favorite and is probably your best bet in trying to get him to eat.

You can get good advice at simplydicus.com I've heard from them that most tap water in the country is OK for Discus without changing anything but the temperature and chlorine. Those guys are very into water changes. 50% a day if you can beleive that! I would just make sure your water is clean of ammonia, nitrites and change the water more than you did before.

My new Discus (2@4days and 2@4hours) did not eat much until I put live blackworms in and then they freaked out. I have been stairing at these fish for hours just watching how cool they are. Other tropicals seem almost lifeless compared to Discus. They are smart and you can see it in there eyes.

Feed them live black worms twice a day for a while, until they put on weight. I would put most of your other fish into another tank, they won't be compatable with the discus for long. When you are sure the discus will make it you should get some more as discus do better with other discus. For tank mates you should get other peaceful fish such as tetras and dwarf cichlids.

Well the silver dollars and the chanel cat are for my 150 as soon as it finishes cycling hopefully in about two or so weeks. That would just leave the discus with the danios and severums and I was going to get some cories at that point. I would give him away but 1)the store gave them to me because they don't carry discus because they are just not that popular here (its a college town and people don't have that kind of money) and 2)I am the only one I know that keeps fish. That leaves driving to Atlanta and thats a long drive, possible but a pain. I really want to keep the fish though. Thanks for the website I went there last night and it does have a lot of great info. I will try the brine shrimp this morning. Where would you suggest getting live blackworms? Thanks for the help.

He didn't make it. Thanks for the suggestions. I went out for some live brine and when I came back he was gone. He didn't even make it twenty hours. No more discus for me.

..stress...?

Discus need to school with others...
Seems there could have been some stress during the transfer.
An established aquarium in not a good "start-up" tank for Discus. Try not to keep a 'solo' Discus..
They really do need the company of their own kind. ...

Don't get too down on keeping Discus...

I would suggest doing a lot more inquiring and a lot of investigation before getting any more, but, if you do all that, you will probably be able to get them to thrive (if you put your new-found knowledge to good use).
