Hey -- just found this forum. I've got a freshwater angelfish (see av), first one, and I'm wondering what I can put in there with him.
I have a couple fantail goldfish (very small, .75 - 1") I was thinking about introducing, but I know they might pester him and his fins are delicate.

Any general care advice for him (I've just been googling around, but it's not incredibly helpful)?

no its definately not a good idea to put the goldfish in with him
first off, what size tank is he in?

OK. depending on who I talk to, I hear different things. I guess, like with everything, people have different opinions. What's your reasoning? Just so I can learn more. :)

Well becuause they require different temps and foods. Since you're not telling me how big you're tank is, and instead asking me why goldfish can't be kept with angel fish, i'm presuming you're pretty stuck on this idea. You can try it if you want, buti wouldn't if i were you

Not stuck on it... just trying to educate myself. If I listened to everyone I'd be doing a lot of contradictory things, that's all :o

ok, so you're a newbie. I'll explain further; The reason you shouldn't keep angel fish with goldfish is that they require different temps (angels about 26) and goldfish like much much cooler- they've a coldwater fish!
Secondly is that they require different foods- feeding angel fish goldfsih food and vice versa will be alright for a few weeks but the long term affects are not good. Its like feeding a dog cat food. I am not sure about the agressiveness, though. Goldfish are just gentle giants, and in my experience they couldn't hurt a fly! :)

So its your chioce really
If you don't try it, you'l never know if it works
but its quite a risk to take

Fancy goldfish are cold-water fishes that grow 8-10", are extremely messy, stunt very easily and need at least 15 gallons of double-filtered tank per fish. They can live 20+ years if housed properly. They need an "adult sized" tank to start out as they grow fast.

Comet (your regular feeder/pond type) goldfish can grow over 2' in size and be very aggressive. They won't hesitate to attack slower fish, including fancy goldfish, especially at feeding time. I don't recommend that they be kept in tanks, unless it's for overwintering from a pond that freezes over.

All goldfish need water that contains more O2 and that means lower temperatures. The water the water, the less O2 there is. Because of this, they also require a diet that is high in carbohydrates and low in proteins.

Angelfish need much warmer water than goldfish do and have totally different dietary needs than goldfish do. They also need a tall tank.

We really do need to know the size of your tank.
