So does anyone know of some freshwater fish suitable for a 5g tank?
There is no point in calling me "cruel" for asking if any fish are suitable for a 5g, just getting that out of the way.

There are a few species I would consider small/lucid enough to be content with a 5 gallon tank...

Betta - Make sure the tank has decent filtration and is planted. Give it places to hide and only put one (male OR female, not both) into the tank.
Scarlet Gem Badis - Tank needs to be heavily planted and have excellent filtration. I wouldn't do this unless you are experienced at fishkeeping.
Sparkling Gouramis - Heavily planted tank, good filtration, lots of hiding places. In my experience they don't use much space so having 1 in a tank this size would be good.

I'd like to note that none of the fish listed can be kept together in a 5 gallon tank.

i have a 5.5 or 6.5 fluval edge tank. ive had it set up for about 2 or more years now, with the same fish in it ever since. i think i either started out with 8 or 11 "boraras maculatus". but now i think i have 7. they've been AWESOME fish, and never seemed to not like my tank. they are soo small, and even at full grown they arent even half an inch. and yes, they can be really that red if you take care of them.
i think once they all pass away i may get a betta. or find some other micro-sized fish for it.

Yes, Boraras Maculatus are excellent fish for that size of tank, as are Boraras Brigittae- mix & match them for a colorful display. You might also consider a small group of celestial pearl danios - superb-looking when they really color up. Or you may like endlers.

guppies
endler's livebearers
bettas
honey gouramis
boraras maculatus
celestial pearl danios
small tetras
and a lot more

Dwarf puffers
Betta
Pygmy gulf coast sunfish
Guppies
Endlers
Just a few off the top of my head.

i think in 5 gal neve fish, betta is limit, but long and close tank, no cube or open tank. Better chose shrimp.

Thanks everyone I ended up getting a veiltail betta for the tank. It was my younger brothers birthday and he really liked bettas.

Don't forget to filter and do waterchanges :P
