Frustrated Green !

Well with 50 dollars the best thing I could suggest would be to buy a bag of reef crystals and some RO water.

Because brita filters don't take out nearly enough crap for the water to be reef safe. Reef Crystals is a quality salt.

That works also, I use reef crystals and shamelessly try to put the brand in everyones head. Feel free to use whatever salt you see fit.

What changes have you made to the tank recently other than light? Have you added any livestock at all? Live Rock? Anything? What are your gph (for information sake only) through your tank? Do you have a 25 x turnover? Do you have a sump? Have you added anything or changed anything in your sump recently?

To be honest I find it hard to believe that you are experience a bloom like this and aren't finding higher nitrates or phosphates in your inputs into the tank. Those are the nutrients needed even for plankton to survive.

I think more information is needed.

I still think water quality, after hearing that the water is filtered through a Brita unit I am pretty sure. As far as the tests if the algae is using the nutrients faster than they are produced then there very well could be a false negative.

Thats why I said I couldn't believe he wasn't finding these things in his inputs. The nutrient has to be coming from some where.. 99% of the time I've found its either lousy lighting (which we've ruled out) or through the water being added to the tank...

But I agree with Grins that it could be a possibility that he has a expired test kit. The first kit I bought off the shelf expired within 2 months of owning it. I bought a 2nd kit and had completely different results and it was the same brand.

I just think we need to help him rule out everything as I have seen posts like this before and know I have not gotten the complete information and it was one small piece that was the clue to the whole puzzle.

I bought a new test kit the same day as i bought my lights. Perhaps the readings might have been wrong before the new test kit but since 10 weeks ago, everything is reading normal. The only thing I have done different is I bought and added some rotifiers, I added the entire bag ( water included ) because they were so small, I couldn't even strain them out... perhaps something in that water could have changed or added something into my tank ? I bought it from livebrineshrimp.com
