GAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! I am so *$#!#%@# angry right now!!

The thing about feeder goldfish is that:

1) they are cheap, so can be used for all sorts of "games" (this is just one example) and "prizes"
2) they are meant to be feeders, unlike other fish who are meant to be pets....so to many people, this completely negates any right of their's to live
3) most people don't care about fish, they barely do about cows, pigs and chickens, so you can't expect them to feel for something that has even less in common with humans

The first thing that pops into my mind is: don't those imbeciles realize that they can get sick from doing this? Forget about getting a sore throat, feeder fish especially are full of diseases....I am sure these redneck morons wouldn't eat sushi, but they swallowed a goldfish to prove how tough they were, salmonella or not.

Idiots, the whole lot of them...but honestly, writing letters is pointless (I know it wasn't you who wrote it). It's like telling someone who is burning trash that they really shouldn't be doing that, don't they know that it's not safe and is against the law? Yeah, like they will listen to you...the best thing they'll do is just ignore you!

When I see people making stinky, smoldering fires full of all kinds of junk, when it's not even LEGAL TO BURN right now, I just call the fire department. They come in a jiff.

If I were this person, I would have just taken pictures with my phone and said I was reporting it as animal cruelty. Unfortunately, fish are not covered by animal cruelty laws, but chances are these people wouldn't know that.

how is it more ethical to eat the fish cooked than raw? i mean, we like our crayfish boiled alive. Humans are funny because we actually like other creatures, downside of that is you normally kill things when you eat them...even if you're a vegan.

I don't think it's a matter of how ethical it is to eat cooked/raw fish, more of a health concern.

The point is that goldfish aren't meant to be eaten by humans, raw or cooked. You can debate on whether it's ethical to eat fish at all, but swallowing pet goldfish is like buying a pet rabbit from the pet store and eating it.

And the point I was making was that sushi is safe to eat, it is cleaned and prepared, unlike goldfish. Many people think it's gross to eat sushi, but people feel great when they swallow goldfish in front of their friends.

yeah, i totally get you....rabbit is delicious btw.

Yeah, my mom liked rabbit stew. Looked kind of gross to me, but now I don't eat meat (occasionally seafood)...although I don't have a problem with people raising their own food or hunting for themselves. In another life, perhaps I would do the same!

I have to say, I think this is a little bit of a weird thing for any organization to do, much less a religious one. What happened to the old fashioned pie eating contests? At least a big old hunk of apple pie wasn't swimming around 30 seconds before its demise. (And actually, I understand that apple pie tastes much better with Cool Whip than goldfish do!):)

That's what I thought. Why not apple pie eating or bobbing for apples or anything else? And bring on t he cool w-hip!! ;)

... Their deaths will be avenged when the guys that swallow them wind up with salmonella and other parasites from eating feeders... :P that's sad and disgusting!

I can believe people out there would swallow a live goldfish, wouldn't really expect to see that in a church though.... I thought they taught respect life? Either way, gross.
