gambusia affinis and guppy cross?

Regarding Gambusia x Poecilia

Please keep us updated as to the progress of your experiment. Out of curiosity, what state did you purchase the Gambusia specimen in? This is somewhat important, because there are actually two major sub-species (or species depending on who you ask) of Gambusia in North America, Gambusia aff. affinis and Gambusia aff. holbrooki. The two differ slightly in their genetic composition, so it would be interesting to know which variety is being crossed.

Also, it might be a good idea to acquire more Gambusia males, considering the length of time involved in growing up the virgin female guppy fry. Fertility can be a bit hit or miss in the livebearers, and it probably would be best to have a number of young Gambusia males on hand when the guppy fry mature.

Photos would be greatly appreciated!

i have the eastern species of gambusia, they are three spotted white males i collected from the wild. i have the fry now.

Couldn't a viable hybrid of guppies and gambusia turn out to be an(other) ecological catastrophe if they got loose?

Like killer bees?

Killer guppies?

Killer guppies?
Are you serious? That is the oddest fear-based concern I've heard YET.
To answer your question, all of the guppies I've ever seen have come from a pet store and neither of them have been a hybrid of any kind. You may rest assure that such an event has not occurred, nor is it likely to ever occur.
