My grandfather practiced chinese medicine and was always extolling the virtues of garlic, mainly that it 'cleanses your system'. He used to eat cloves of garlic raw like you would eat an apple. He was never sick and lived a long life (not sure about the breath) so I believe in the properties of garlic. My questions are:

1. If you are treating as a preventative measure because 1 fish recently died in the tank possibly from internal parasites, how long would you do the treatment ?

2. For those who have bought Seachem's Garlic Guard, is it 100% garlic juice ? It gets tedious chopping up little cloves of garlic and trying to extract 1 drop from them.

3. Would you use garlic from time to time, even on healthy fish, just to 'cleanse their system' ?

Thanks.

i ALWAYS use garlic. i have crushed it with some flakes and just put the flakes in the tank. i always add it to my beefheart mix. i use 1 clove for 2 oz of meat. garlic is also a great attractant for fish too.

I use garlic x-treme when I feed all of my fish. I just mix it in with thier food when I feed them. Since I started using this product mixed in at feedings, my fish are very healthy.

my dad smoked three + packs of unfiltered cigarettes all his life and lived to 90. is that a testament to the health induced by smoking? i don't think so and neither should you. so, if some chinese guy lived a long and healthy life and ate garlic, it may have nothing at all to do with the herb, but rather, his fortunate genetics. your results may differ.

I would say that since there are exceptions to every claim, we should never claim absolutes of course. However, garlic has been known to have healing properties and cigarettes not, evidenced in the billions of dollars in lawsuits won against tobacco companies vs the ones won against garlic.

Garlic at best helps you, at worst does nothing but foul up your breath.
Cigarettes at best does nothing save blacken your lungs, at worst kills you and those around you.

I would say your comparison holds no water.

my "comparison" wasn't meant to hold water. rather it was meant to question the seeming 'truth' of the garlic and long life comparison.

Is there any studies showing garlic killing parasites or bacteria? I know that garlic oil can be a very good attractant for getting picky fish to eat.

Well then, you used a really poor analogy in cigarettes.

It just means I believe that garlic has healing properties. It may not cure cancer but based on my experience, I have more good feelings for it than cigarettes.

Perhaps, he could have lived to 145.

That may be so. We'll never know. Perhaps in future we can clone 2 people and give one the placebo.

Whether the guy is chinese, white, black or dominican, I don't see why that matters. Can't a white guy practice chinese medicine ? I could be a 1/4 something or other. Not meant to be inflammatory, just curious as to why you tagged chinese to the guy.

We could argue this forever but I am no doctor and I have no proof so it's just a matter of faith. Like a religion. It's whether you're into holistic health or not. I choose to believe. So simple.

What are you thinking that you would want to "cleanse" them of?

You can't compare apples and oranges. I know you're trying to ridicule the blind faith in garlic but one is possibly good for you with no ill effects while the other threatens your life. If your dad lived long, it's definitely not due to cigarettes. You cannot say the same of garlic with absolute certainty. It's just bad analogy. At least use something like vitamins or bad herb or coffee or chocolate where there's some vagueness to the issue. There are plenty of studies done on the healing powers of garlic. Also here and here. Just google it. Whether you believe these studies, however, is another whole area of debate. haha.
