i had a couple ghost catfish or otherwise known as glass catfish. i came home and the one was lying upside down bent in a c shape, he/she was still breathing and struggling to move, it looked like it was really suffering, it was dead the next morning. does anyone know what happened to cause this? the other ghost catfish and all the other fish are fine. i also have neon tetras, i read that the neons can carry a disease called neon tetra disease which can be transferred to others, could it be this?

If everyone else is doing fine 1 week after your loss, I would rule out any communicable disease. Most likely the shape was caused by the fish trying to relieve the pain of a spinal injury. Imagine how, when we get injured, we favor the injury area. Unfortunately for this creature, the injury was too severe. It could have be trapped by something it, or one of its tankmates, caused to slip/fall. See if anything is out of place to identify the probable source. Also, look for anything loose or wobbly to prevent future incidents.

Thanks
i didnt notice anything out of the ordinary, i did have an aggresive molly male which i took back to the pet shop, all my other fish are very peaceful, loaches and ancistrus, and as mentioned the tetras. could the molly have bullied him? he did chase the other fish.

Is it possible the tank is not fully cycled or is re-cycling?

This sounds exactly what happened to my very first fish - 4 glass cats who were put in an uncycled tank. All 4 perished in the same manner.

I would check your water.

well i did test the water all the levels are as they should be, the other glass catfish are doing fine and all the other fish seem happy.

Hard to say who was the terror, if it was the result of aggression. Barbs can be strange also. Unfortunately, the fish we keep never seem to read the literature that tells how they should behave.

so true, thanks.
so far i only have one tank (planning to get more) all the fish i have are peaceful since the male molly is gone, no more incedents.
doing a water change today, so will see how they do afterwards.

You said you had other fish? What are they?

i have neons, guppies, khuli loaches, cory cats, albino ancistrus and a butterfly/hillstream loach. and the last ghost/glass catfish. they all seem happy and healthy, i think it was an isolated case.

ive raised the pump so that more oxygen is getting into the water, all the fish seem more bright and active, i think it was an oxygen issue.
