Ghost Shrimp just hatched! What do they eat?

Most "Ghost Shrimp" sold in North America are wild caught, and are usually examples of any given Palemonetes sp.. That is, an unknown species of Palaemonetes shrimp.

If you have Palaemonetes paludosus, or any of a number of closely related Palaemonetes shrimp species, the young will only have one or two larval stages. They mature in freshwater only. Brackish or marine water will kill them.

As for food, they should do fine on what is in your tank, if the tank is well established. Since you're not trying to operate a full scale breeding program, you don't need to bother with the phytoplankton or specialty foods. If you are concerned, you can powder fish flake, algae wafer, or pellet food. Before adding it to the tank, take a cup of water from your tank and use it to mix the powdered food. Then use a turkey baster or such to spread the mixture around the tank. IMO, that's overkill, but it works.

Well there are several shrimp species called ghost shrimp. I guess the information I read dealt with one species in particular that need brackish conditions and breed in full salt.

If they don't need brackish water and some places sell them 10 for $1, why are the posts from people saying they had ghost shrimp hatch so rare? I've searched multiple forums and over and over it's the same thing.... berried females, eggs won't hatch, shrimp dies. If they multiple like crazy in freshwater people should have them as plentiful as moss.

Most people who have ghost's keep them in with fish, larval shrimp will get eaten up quickly as a tasty snack for fish, along with other shrimp themselves preying on them. They'll also get sucked up into HOB or canister filters. Pretty sure over a few hour period pretty easy for them all to disappear.

I've had saltwater shrimp give birth before and no sign any babies with in a day too.

Its just near impossible to be successful with low order breeders unless you have a setup specifically for them.

I've had a colony of feeder 'Ghost shrimp' for over 10 years. They're still doing fine in a mixed species shrimp colony, with Amano shrimp and RCS.

Any suggestions on where to buy some 'starter' ghost shrimp? I only have 2 LFS, in addition to a Petsmart and Petco, that's within a reasonable distance from me. Only 1 of the LFS has ghost shrimp and they are $1/each. The Petco doesn't have them. Petsmart's are .33/each if I remember. I've bought the $1 ones and the .33 cent ones. I put them in a light stocked Guppy tank and I can't get them to live more than 2 weeks. Cycled tank, water parameters excellent.

Got any of yours for sale? :)

I got a handful (I paid for nine, had 12 in the bag) of Petsmart ghost shrimp probably 8 months ago and put them in a planted community tank. Now and then I find a big pink dead one. I would say at least half of the ones that I see are smaller than the original twelve. when I decided to hatch out a clutch of mystery snail eggs, I fished out 6 of them for the 2and 1/2 g I had set up. Then about a week ago I again moved 6 shrimp into my angel tank, to help clean up. I just looked, and there are still at least 8 in the original tank, probably many more that I'm not spotting. so that's 20, probably more. Plus maybe 10 dead. Not saying I bred ghost shrimp, just saying.. They multiplied.
