How can I calculate the glass thickness for any size of tanks? I would like to understand how people are able to calulate what thickness of glass we would need. The bigger the tank is, the thicker the glass needs to be I know that for sure. Is there any special formula for it? :bowing: I'm playing around with the idea of having ~200 gal tank that would house oscars, green or red terrors, jack dempsy and a royal pleco.

Sweet! Thanks guys. :thm:
You all are the best. I'll be sure to go over through those links tonight throughly. Right now I gonna suffer in class at 8am (still waking up right now uuughh!) Yup, today I'm back to school. Oh oh, I just have to say... I'm a senior this semester! WOW!! That means I'll be able to get started with my masters pretty soon :bowing:

Well, I've checked both links out and at garf.org... I got 3/8 inch for glass thickness... which is for a tank w/ the dimension of 84x24x24 which would be nearly 210 gallon (209.45). Does 3/8 inch sound right?? It kind of seem like tad thin? My dad has 125 gallon tank and its probably around the same size or thicker than 3/8 inch.
As for the other link... I'm still working on it.

They give you the minimum requirement. That is not saying that you can't use 1/2" if you want to be on the safe side. The other thing to consider is the type of glass you buy. Laminate has the least strength, plate glass is stronger, and tempered is the strongest (but tempered will have catastrophic failure if it breaks).

Interesting. Another question... how do I find the list of standard aquarium sizes that are out there? Would it be cheaper to buy one of those standard sized ones or custom?

Theres a little more to it than that. Theres the safety factor to be considered. Thats why I posted the link for calculating thickness. Check it out and youll see whats involved and how to answer your questions.

Also, what were concerned with is tensile strength . Tempered is 4-5 times stronger than annealed. Annealed is usually used for the sides. And tempered , sometimes, on the bottom. The big problem with tempered is that it cant be cut. So most DIYers cant use it.

Standard Sized Tanks?

UGGHH... custom tanks seem like pain in butt, I might be better off having somebody else make one for me or....
do you guys have any idea where I can find standard sized tanks that are out there? Preferrably glass not arcylic. I haven't had much luck googling for that. :look:
I plan on stopping by some LFS and see if they can order one ~200 gal tank for me.
Any help would be appreciated.
