Glo-Fish = Danios

wow think about if you had a fluorescent night light and your cat came in and it had a red glowing face, and you were sleeping and woke up...wow, I would scream on the top of my lungs! lol

what are some other animals that "fluoresce"??

thats a good question well wait for lesser28 for the answer

I think I saw a firefly flouresce once, but then it got squashed on my windshield, was unable to really tell.

I feel special :)

And, I do have a few examples - there are some shrimp and crabs that naturally fluoresce, along with thing like jelly fish and some other marine animals (where the Glo-fish get their fluorescent genes). I think there are also insects that fluoresce - there are certainly once that light up - like one of my favorites, the lightning bug.

Scientist have spliced fluorescent protein genes into a variety of animals including mice, cats, pigs. In the lab I actually spliced fluorescent protein genes into bacteria so that when they made their natural cellular proteins they also fluoresced and those that did fluoresce we could pick to make the other proteins we wanted them to make -- really cool stuff!

In reality, most of this fluorescent splicing has happened for scientific research - to track what genes are being used when, especially when looking at cell and organism development.

So what shrimp flouresce?

This was a really neat article about some shrimp, crabs and even sharks that fluoresce.

There are also mantis shrimp that fluoresce.

Most of the water critters that fluoresce tend to be marine animals that live fairly deep, they fluoresce because many normal colors are not visible deep under water.

There are also some spiders that fluoresce - I'd like to see one of those.

lesser28 are you a bioligist because if you arent I sure reccomend you to become one! Thats a really cool picture of the scorpion, is that natural or is it injected?
