I respect that point of view although I don't agree with it. I respect everyones opinion and always avoid these conversations on here despite the fact I want to scream at my moniter sometimes. The only reason I got into this one is because my name got brought into it and I was asked directly. Like I said. These debates never go well on here. Some people have an inability to understand that some people have diferent views other than their own. Some people just take it to far like one has already done imo.

Alan- I asked because I was curious of the rationale. No offense was intended. I happen to have a different view than you do, but I respect your's. No need for debate. Some people do take things too far and others take too much for granted. JMO

Well I don't expect that I am that person but I will be happy to tell you why from my point of view. I think its important tob vote wheather I for the pres of the u.s. Or just a fish poll. If you read my post I don't think it is cool but when I read people who talk about cruelty to fish it irks me. Imo to be cruel is to cause suffering. Suffering imo is an emotional state. In order to suffer would require a state of awareness. Fish don't have emotionions they don't have awareness. They survive and function on pure instinct alone. I voted cool because it the concept bugs me less. I don't agree with fish bowls because I believe in keeping anything you keep healthy. If its fish or an ant farm. We do keep a betta in a vase but we do 50% water changes every other day. I keep my fish healthy as I can because I enjoy them and when I do something I try to do it right reguardless of what it is. Plus I pay for my fish. Everytime one dies that's money down the drain. So no I don't think fish bowls are cool but I don't think they are cruel either. I am posting from my phone so I apologize about the poorly written post. Also when this thread gets closed remember you asked and I called it.
For the sake of the hobby I vote CRUEL.
Alan I must ask, do you feel we as humans are the only creatures that suffer? Have you ever seen a fish gasping for air as it is taking it's dying breath? You do not think that the fish is aware that it is in pain?
Not trying to start a fight here:) Just debating:)

I've seen a few threads similar to this in the short time I have been a member here. They always turn into a heated arguement and get closed. I don't think they're cruel. I don't think cruelty comes into play with something that has no emotion or thought. I just think they are extremely boring and is why I will never own one. One of the reasons I love to keep fish is becuase of all the beauty in a tank. So many different things going on in one place ib my home. Very interesting exciting and beatiful. Can't have that in a bowl.

Saying a fish is a mindless machine on a fish-lover forum IS asking for a heated arguement. Its important to state that this is your opinion, because it sure isnt a fact.

I'm not trying to start something, I just feel strongly about some choice words. I'm probably helping to keep the ball rolling, though. (sorry!)

I did not even think keeping goldfish in a bowl would be an issue with fishkeepers who come here.I thought all of us were beyond this kind of dumb noob style fishkeeping.

Statements like this will repel "dumb noobs" who simply don't know any better, but are earnestly trying to learn as much as they can, from coming on this site to ask questions, because they don't want to be flamed. You must remember that while many of our most active members are very experienced and knowledgable, there are many more who came here precisely because they are a "dumb noob" who doesn't know much about the hobby, and they want to learn. Comments like this will not help those "noob" fishkeepers who are already nervous about asking what they fear may be perceived as "dumb" questions from coming here for advice.

I voted "cruel" but I also respect others who may disagree, especially if they can articulate a rationale.

i don't think the"object" of cruelty needs to be aware of the cruelty to be harmed, or for it to be called cruelty. whether or not a fish feels pain, the potential physical effects of the bowl (ammonia poisoning, stunting, etc) can still cause harm. just because a fish doesn't know it's being harmed (in your opinion) is not carte blanche to injure it at will.

There's honestly no offense taken. I don't mind you asking and I don't mind explaining. I just thought your post about you want to know who voted and stop hiding behind the poll was a bit of a hostel approach. Perhaps its only my interpretation. No hard feelings.

Well, bowls can be pretty cool if they are large enough to house a filter, a heater, air pump, ect. But I think in this poll they mean those small goldfish bowls. I vote cruel then.

I really don't have anything against bowls, so long as they're big enough! I'm sure if you had a poll with a 1 gallon tank it would be different. "Tank" is just a rectangular aquarium. "Bowl" is a round aquarium. I really don't see what makes round aquariums more cruel than the same capacity rectangular aquarium. Just my opinion though. Would a 55 gallon bowl with filter, heater, air pump, ect. be any more cruel than a same sized regular aquarium?

Although I understand the point above I think everyone is forgetting the fact that this poll is limited to GOLDFISH. We all know (or I hope we all do) that goldfish bowls are not for goldfish. I still dislike 1 gallon betta bowls even if they are filtered and heated because it fuels the misconception that bettas live in puddles but that's really beside the point in this particular discussion. Goldfish and bowls? I vote CRUEL.

I don't mind debating. No I do not think that. I am an animal lover and value all life. I know that lots of animals have minds intellegent enough to suffer. Like I said it is my opinion the suffering is an emotional state. Fear and pain are examples of suffering. To experience these a creature must be capable of thought beyond instinct. Imo fish lack thought and certainly emotion and act on instint alone. Similar to insects. Many creatures have emotion other than humans. Dogs and horses just to name 2. Yes I have seen a fish gasp for air. Nothing more than the instint to survive that every living oranism has.
