Gold Nugget Pleco...Just bought... ICH.... Im Dumb

The method I have suggested is a combination method that should be done in all stages. The temp shotens the life cycle of the parasite, the salt increases the slime coat creation on the fish thus assisting in health and helping to protect the fish, the vaccumming is to get the cists when they are not in the free swimming stage and the meds are to kill them at that stage. Oh... and I forgot... oxygenate the water as well... at the higher temperatures there is less oxygen in the water.

i lowered the water level about an inch to give the filters more splah for oxygenating while im raising the temps, and ive started adding the salt. last night after the lights went out he was all over the rocks/tank, so he seems to be pretty happy already. i dropped in a few algea waffers last night and they were gone this morning, but the 2 black mollies may of ate those.

i figured i need to add a total of 4 1/2 cups of salt for a 125 gallon tank. man, thats alot of salt

well after talking to the store owner i will be OK.

he agreed with me doing the high temp and salt method, then he also gave me a bottle of Ick Guard to help treat also.

normally their fish policy is 24 hours but he said that if it dies within the next week or so or the Ick doesnt clear he will take care of me.

I have never used the salt method, but I think if you raise the temp up to 84 - 86, the ick should go away. My gold nugget is in 84 degree water with no problems. I keep it with discus.

Edit: To lighten the thread, are you sure that it has ick and is not just the gold spots?

I think that the treatment advice offered by KnaveTO will probably be an excellent choice. However, and I am not trying to be nasty here, please invest in a quarantine tank. A well prepared 10 gallon aquarium would have pretty much eliminated this entire problem - and it would have cost less than that single plecostomous! I imagine, sminker, that you have already reached that conclusion but this advice seems to be worth repeating in light of the number of times this same scenario has been described in the time I have been visiting this site. I had to hear the same advice more than once before I joined the choir but now I am a firm believer and quite happy that I made the decision to use a quarantine tank before I started stocking my 410. I have also decided to use a one month minimum time in quarantine just to be safe. A bit extreme? Maybe, but let us know how you feel once this issue runs its' course. I'm betting that once you figure in the time, money, effort and aggravation you'll agree with that old "ounce of prevention..." thing.
I sure hope that all of your fish survive this ordeal!

I'm sorry to hear about your sick pleco. I just finished updating my post on the Gold Nugget Pleco Ich treatment- case study thread. You can read about what I tried there. Unfortunately, all of mine died... yes, that was very expensive. I hope you have better luck. If he starts getting worse as mine did, you might want to pull him out and get a hospital tank set up so you can medicate him. I dont think you would want to use copper in your main tank.

Please keep posting how your guy is doing and what treatment(s) you have tried. Its always useful to hear about what works, and what doesn't.

Good Luck!
Eric

this was taken tonight. he appears to be getting a little better. since this is almost day 4 im going to do a half dose of Quick Cure i think to help kill the floating bacteria.

i did a 50% WC with some sand vacuuming.

i am wondering how he eats. he shows himself during daylight now and it still pretty active at night. i tried all sorts of foods.

don't reduce the dosage. they are designed to fight the parasite at the dosages stated on the bottle.
