great!!! you got to love it when they pull through.

I have only had to battle ick once, and it was a disaster very early on in my fish keeping career. Since then, I have made it a habit to regularly add salt to my tank. I was told to do this years ago, and I do so with every water change....since then, I have had very good success and I have kept many of the same fish for years and years, without incident. I cannot comment on it's effectiveness once the parasite has infected the tank though, But I'd think it would help a great deal. I also tend to keep my temp a bit on the lower side in general, as I feel the cooler water also combats the parasite from getting started or spreading wildly. I only say this because since I began doing things this way, I have not had a problem again...and that's now going on 12 years or so..*knock on wood*

The only thing cooler temps will do with Ich is lengthen the time between the various stages of its' life cycle. That is why the most common treatment is to raise the temp to over 82F to speed up the lifecyle of the parasite as it is usually killable in only two of the 4 stages. Maintaining salt in a tank continuously is not necessary nor a complete deterrant to ich. There are natural salts in most water already (unless you are using R/O water) that are effective at helping the fish maintain a good slime coat. The only surefire way to prevent an outbreak of Ich (or any other disease) in your primary tank(s) is to quarantine all new purchases for a period of 2 but preferably 4 weeks and observe your fish at each feeding for any signs of stress, lack of appetite or disease.
