actually i'm very familiar with goldfish biology. the stunting situation is not contrary to biological processes, in happens all the time.
and i never said growth hormone was secreted into the water.
however, other hormones are secreted into the water, and those contribute to the stunting... the excess of these hormones eventually causes the growth hormone production to halt. this is a biological mechanism to address overpopulation in the wild.
and i dont know how an LFS could take in a fish "off the street" last i checked goldfish were not land animals. That being said, you must have a hateful LFS. yes, most WILL take in a fish, and no it doesn't have to contaminate their whole stock. it's possible to not put the "off the street" fish in with the others. most LFS have more than one tank. every LFS i've ever been to is willing to take a fish in (provided they have enough room) especially if the other option is that the fish will be improperly cared for.
